demin primitive calling for civility in primitive name-calling

Oh my.

The fund-raiser for Skins's island is sluggish this afternoon; my fellow alum will probably hit a thousand by the end of the day, but if the primitives had been more cooperative, he would've hit a thousand a very long time ago.

So, as usual, the "scarlet lettering" so as to remind the primitives to get cracking and send some dough to Skins's island.

'Repigs', 'Repukes', 'Rethugs': Time to can lazy epithets.

My wife is a Republican. A welded on republican. She hates politics, avoids Fox, MSNBC and news commentary in general. This was so during GWB's administration and Clinton's. Probably the last time she took any real interest was in the days of Ronald Reagan.

What do I mean by welded on? : Voting McCain while she loathed Sarah Palin. Aerial hunting of wolves was enough to turn her stomach.

My wife reads DU. She looks for my posts, and often strays into others with interesting titles. Sometimes I can discuss an issue, but more often, my beloved counters: That's why I hate politics. You hate me. I'm a repuke, a rethug, a fascist. "You are a fascist honey" I say, and we share a smile.

This is not a personal post, just an illustration. The lexicon of casual abuse and invective not only fails to advance exposition, nor debate, but digs the trenches deeper, while the Powers-That-Be stroll happily onwards through no man's land.

Consider DU's beloved: The Magistrate, a man who excels in elegant civility while hitting harder than anyone when he saw fit.

Casual invective is lazy and counterproductive: You're a Rat. You're a Repuke. I hate you, so listen to me.

The Führer is reported to have said, 'On my memorial, there will be no epitaph; The words Adolph Hitler will suffice'.

'Republican' is sufficient.

1. Until their leadership stops calling us the Democrat Party I will continue to call them Republics.

Besides, The Magistrate is a better person than I am.

There aren't invectives strong enough for the republicant's

And if she voted for McCain, well then, that speaks for itself.

Sorry. No sale.

3. When she stands up against Rush Limbaugh

I'll worry about her widdle feelings about being called a Rethug. And I don't even use those terms. I don't see how anybody can vote Republican. They haven't destroyed enough of the land or killed enough people yet? My sister is a Republican too and I think the same of her. She just doesn't take the time to read anything except the shit she gets from Arkansas news which may as well be Republican.

4. How can any reasonable person be "welded on" to a party whose leaders regularly lie and distort the truth about extremely important matters, whose only real core value is the increase of wealth for the wealthiest among us, who have open contempt for the poor and the middle class, and who don't think twice before taking the country to war?

29. So she simply votes for whoever has the (R) after their name?

To me, that is worse than a repuke ideologue. At least they know why they're voting for their candidates, even though I may find their views repugnant.

Besides, you said she loathes Sarah Palin. If she's not tuned in, then how would she know to loathe her? Just because she sees so many other people making fun of her?

5. After everything those ****ers have done to destroy this country? No thanks.

Epithets like repukes, rethugs, etc don't even come close to describing the vile and contempt I feel towards the GOP. After everything they've done to destroy the country, **** over the poor, trample over our civil rights, and dragging us into countless wars across the globe, the GOP can go **** themselves. Alan Grayson described the GOP health-care plan perfectly - "Don't get sick, and if you do, die quickly".

Why does she continue to call herself a Republican, what virtue does she see? Most rethugs I know still cling to the "trickle down" philosophy, despite the fact that it completely and utterly failed. Most still cling to the notion that somehow, the poor should just "pull themselves up by their bootstraps" - that if we all just applied ourselves and weren't so *******ed lazy, that we could all be rich.

11. Kudos, my friend Quixote, for engaging in battle with this particular windmill

I'll give you a rec for the effort. But it's a no-win debate. The name-calling is one of the worst aspects of DU, and one that makes it indistiguishable from FR.

I guess the perjoratives are supposed to be funny, or witty, or clever, but they never are, they add nothing to the substance of the point, and make the user look like a third-grader who is not to be taken too seriously.

When the right does it (Savage, Levin, Limbaugh are the worst) it's offensive, but when a DUer does it, it's supposed to be the height of sophisicated debate. Can't be both.

I always end up with a slightly bad feeling about my post if I resort to using such terms.

16. **** the pugs.

When I'm writing a serious piece, I'll use the real name. When I'm not I'll call the crooked, lying bastards whatever the hell I want to call them.

Maybe when they stop saying the Democrat party, I'll stop.

Until then, the repugs and anyone that is a repug can eat my shorts.

21. I don't think it is helpful to use most of those terms, but fascist is technically and historically correct.

Especially when the GOP shows open contempt for democratic processes as they did during the Bush years, and try to stop it altogether as they are doing now.

39. No thanks.

While I love a turn of a good phrase as much as anyone, I will reserve myself the small pleasure of calling these asswipes what they are. If nothing else, it is steam valve on anger.

I do not apologize for that.

It's funny as hell watching them all bent out of shape because we call them Democrats which as far as I know is a correct term.

I may not lock my doors while sitting at a red light and a black man is near, but I sure as hell grab on tight to my wallet when any democrats are close by.

You can always count on a DUmmy to use an apostrophe to form a plural. They're consistently stupid that way.

Quote

This clever DUmmy has discovered a new noun, the emotion "vile".

Quote
I guess the perjoratives are supposed to be funny
This rare DUmmy didn't use an apostrophe with his plural, so one is tempted to give him the benefit of the doubt and say "perjorative" was just a typo. But we know it wasn't. He doesn't know the word.

I used to be surprised that the smartest group of people on all the innertubes display the vocabulary, spelling, and punctuation skills of cretins, but not anymore.

Until their leadership stops calling us the Democrat Party

I have to make a small correction, DUmmy. One should never capitalize the words "democrat party".

The funny part is they think we actually give a shit.

There's a hundred threads over there just on our calling them the Democrat Party (which makes perfect grammatical sense, BTW). How many threads over here have been devoted to names they call conservatives?

Zero. Zip. Nada one.

They're a bunch of petulant, regressed children, in addition to the cornucopia of neuroses and psychoses to which they themselves admit.

If they want to call me "a sovereign country," I'd thank them.  Then, maybe declare them to "be a threat" to the sovereign country of Me, and deal with the "threat." :-)

Even though its a not nice word, the biggest laugh I have ever had is when someone called me a republic*nt. Honestly thought it was pretty clever. And I am past being offended by name-calling by about 30 plus yrs.
There is no virtue in compulsory government charity, and there is no virtue in advocating it. A politician who portrays himself as caring and sensitive because he wants to expand the government's charitable programs is merely saying that he is willing to do good with other people's money. Well, who isn't? And a voter who takes pride in supporting such programs is telling us that he will do good with his own money— if a gun is held to his head.
