Does Garlic powder go rancid? I just started to make Paula Dean's house dressing. Simple enough but when I opened the jar of garlic powder, it was very yellow and clumped up. It does not smell "off" but it sure looks funny. Should I toss it and buy a new jar? I have no idea how long I have had it but its been in my spice cabinet for quite a while.

Recipe simple enough. I'd use it for grilling.

1 Cup Salt
1/4 cup pepper
1/4 cup Garlic Powder.

Mix well and that's. Beats fiddling with 3 containers when one will do.

1. On second thought, I threw it out and bought a new jar.

I could not begin to remember how long I had that jar. Starting today, I am using a permanent marker and writing the date of purchase on the bottom of all the spices I buy. Many do not have a "use by" date on then.

I think I'll spend a little time this afternoon going through some of those jars. Some I have never opened like the Cumin from Trader Joe's. Never used it, think I'll keep a very small jar and toss the rest. Same with some of those 5,6,7 oz jars of stuff that sits on the top gathering age.

Good excuse to clean the shelves too.

2. Good. The fact that it was all funky and clumped meant that it had long outlived its usefulness.

Try dating the jars of stuff you get. You'd be surprised how old some of the stuff gets when you date it and don't use it frequently.

I'm lucky, I live 5 minutes away from three separate places that sell herbs and spices in bulk and have a rapid turnover. In addition, here in the desert southwest most supermarkets sell Mexican herbs and spices in baggies, rapid turnover there, too.

Little jars of stuff in the supermarket are probably a year old when you get them.

Oh, I dunno.

When franksolich moved out to this place the autumn of 2005, there were some things in the cupboards that had been left by the last person who lived here.

The last person who lived here, lived here 1988-1995.

Among the culinary things were tin boxes (Schilling's) of spices and stuff.

And a container of baking powder that pre-dated the invention of UPCs.

And a tin of poppyseed with a stamped-ink "10 cents" price-tag (also no UPC).

Some pretty ancient eats, here.

franksolich has used all of them, here-and-there, to no ill effect.

Beat me to it damnit :-) I caught that one myself.
Those herbs don't last DUmmies long enough to be of concern.

Garlic powder and granulated garlic tend to clump. I just bang the container on the counter to loosen.

Apparently I've been using Paula Dean's dressing my whole life to season steaks, though with much less salt.

sprinkle on granulated garlic
sprinkle on pepper
grill steak
salt to taste.

Ain't it tho? Everything has to be endlessly questioned and analyzed. I guess that's their approach on life that allows them to not really have to actually DO anything. If they talk about it long enough, they hope whatever the situation is, will go away. Or someone else will come along and fix it for them.

Then they run to the dump to announce what they're doing, no matter how trivial.

< du > I ran out of trash bags so I went to the store for more. But I couldn't decide, do I get the ones with the plastic bands at the top that pulls the bags closed, or do I get the regular ones with the twist ties? The ones with the bands are more convenient, but you don't get as many for the same price. You get more bags with twist ties, but that's so much more work. Plus, they always give you more twist ties than you need and they end up in the storage drawer. It's a waste of natural resources. Now I've got a drawer full of them too that don't match their original bags. I can't use them on new bags because they were made for different ones, and I get new twist ties anyway. So what do I do with twist ties? Can we make them into gifts?

Eww... Actually, I keep mine on the counter too. Too much hassle dealing with that spring loaded thing. One of the benefits of living alone, I guess.

What is it with guys? Neither one of 'em here, will put in a new roll. They either sit the new one on top of the empty or on the back of the toilet.

I don't care if it's to the back or to the front...just put it on.

Two of the cats that play with it though, prefer it to roll to the front. Makes it easier to get it all in a pile on the floor. Otherwise...it has teeth stabs into it.... ::)
Just hand over the chocolate...back away slowly...far away....and you won't get hurt....

In all  actuality, Ann Landers stated that it was personal preference. I remember that article pretty well.

As far as the garlic goes, I use so much of the stuff that I buy the BIG containers from Sam's Club. It doesn't have a chance to even get clumped.
