I'm guessing something about not voting for Bush's 3rd term or something like that.  The DUmmies were so afraid what President Bush would do with the Patriot Act, (which the DimRats are trying to sneak through in the "Jobs Bill"), but I was afraid what a DemonRat in office would do.

When I had my Yukon I wouldn't let them turn the onstar on at all.  I doubt that did any good but it made me feel better.

This spying shit needs to stop.  They are bending stuff this way and that to make it all fit and none of it is good.

 I would have expected the whole 'expectation of privacy' thingy to have been settled law when the USSC slapped down Baghdad Jim McDermott and the rest of the Dim'Rats for recording cell phone converations over a scanner.

Apparently I would be expecting too much though, and everything depends upon what the definition of 'is' is today.

Shouldn't be too hard.....since the government owns GM........as an aside, I refuse to purchase ANY vehicle that communicates with the outside world in any manner.........

Further, where is the outrage?  When the Bush administration wanted to wiretap calls from terrorists outside the US to numbers located in the country.....the libs went batshit crazy.......why is it OK now?

I think Onstar records have been used in several crash investigations.  Wasn't there something about cars having a "black box" that would record information at the time of a crash? Also, we still have congress critters thinking about taxing us on miles driven, versus gallons of gas used. That would require some sort of tracking system.

It was bad enough when McDermott did it when cell phones were analog with no encryption.  Now see how well that plays with the digital encryption most cell phones today have.

They only get worried when the government spies on terrorists. Not the public. Like when they tell ISP's to keep records of website visits of all users for 2 years. If it had been suspected terrorists they'd been howling about it.

I am not sure this is in fact spying.  All one has to do is to turn off their cell phone when they feel they are in an area they shouldn't be in.

I have Low Jack on my car to track it if it is stolen.   It is not that people are being spied on without their knowledge, same with our PC, we leave tracks every where we go.

Throw away phones are used by the crooks, $8.00 for the phone and a calling card for $10.00

These tracking divices on a cell phone have saved many lives, lost people found and the body's of loved ones.

More then one way to look at this problem.

Exactly.  Why not make it an 'opt in' kind of deal.  If I choose not to opt in and they can't find me when I'm lost while camping that is bad on me!  I didn't ask to be tracked .... when I bought my cell phone I was NOT buying a lo-jack.

If I understand correctly "they" know how to turn on a cellphone and listen without alerting the owner. And lets not forget the FBI wants to know every website we visit.
