Snow Causes 50-Car Pileup In Pennsylvania

(CBS/AP)  A chain-reaction crash on a snowy interstate highway in western Pennsylvania involving about 50 vehicles, including an ambulance carrying patients, killed one person Thursday, officials said.

A 10-mile stretch of Interstate 90 near the New York border was closed for hours in both directions after the early afternoon accident. Several people were slightly injured, authorities said.

Among the vehicles involved were several tractor-trailers and tanker trucks. The trucks were not damaged, said Maria Finn, a spokeswoman for the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency.

The motorists who was killed was trapped between a box truck and a tractor-trailer hauling cars.

"It was snowy. It probably interfered with visibility a little bit, and obviously traction, but weather may have contributed to it, but can't be completely blamed for it. People also have to drive with the weather in mind," Sgt. Adam Steinheiser, a Pennsylvania State Police spokesman, told CBS Radio News.

Maybe they'll learn that they can't drive the speed limit during inclement conditions....... I see it all too often here in Texas and all too often up "Nort" in MN. They DO have a little more sense up "Nort" though.

Unless they are driving something with 4 wheel drive. They think they will never slip n slide around. Usually makes them pretty dangerous as they dont slow down at all.

Yeah, the people up north seem to forget that even thought they have 4WD and can get going easily enough, they sure as hell can't stop any faster or maneuver much better. Most of the vehicles I saw off of the road up and belly up ( or on their side) were usually 4WD or a 4WD SUV or some sort. Here in Texas, I stay off the roads if at all possible because I know that most Texans and Okies are complete idiots when it comes to driving on the snow covered roads.

Hence the reason I am not looking forward to my commute tomorrow.  More than likely I will hit the road about 4:30 or so.  Better to be on it with less people.

Good plan, Thor.  Just because you know how to drive on it doesn't mean anybody else out there does, including the truckers.

EXACTLY!!! As I drove into town this morning to do some bookwork at the VFW, I watched these idiots blasting around on the roads. They weren't too bad yet, but I could see them hitting a slick spot and it could be all over for them and the people they may crash into. At least in MN, the people kind of got retrained after the first couple of snowfalls. Down here, not a chance. They'll go 70 mph and damn anybody that gets in their way. Of course, those are the ones that wind up in the ditches or the medians.  :rotf: :rotf: :rotf:

Unfortunately I ended up with one of those morons behind me back in January 2000 on I44, the SOB totaled out my truck.  I had nowhere to go (On a bridge) and I could see him heading toward me sideways at well over 70mph while I was doing about 45 to ease my way past a semi and a pick-up off on the median at the end of the bridge.   All I could do was brace for it and think 'This is gonna suck.'
