Earthquake rattles Chicago area
« on: February 10, 2010, 10:03:17 AM »

A mild earthquake shook northern Illinois this morning.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported a 3.8-magnitude quake at 3:59:33 a.m. centered in a farm field on Plank Road near Hampshire and 3.1 miles underground. Initially, it had reported the magnitude as 4.3 with an epicenter about 5.5 miles east of Sycamore.

The quake was felt over a wide area -- from Wisconsin to Tennessee -- but there were no reports of any damage so far, according to the Kane County and DeKalb County sheriff's departments, which are closest to the epicenter.

I slept through it, but on the Cubs message board, some people say they were awakened by it.

On a serious note.....3 miles underground is really not that much. I think that's about what the Haiti earthquake was measured.

Kind of scary....

Would be typical of many of the Chicago a-holes I've met over the years. :evillaugh:

Climate change, global warming....

:ohnoes:

I didn't mean it as a "chicken little" effect.....

It seems like earthquakes have sort of a pattern to them. They will happen in one part of the world for a while then move to another. Which I guess is normal given that if the tectonic plates move somewhere it's going to cause them to move somewhere else. Opposite reaction and all that. Must be this side of the world's time to get them.

My comment had to do with the shallow depth...if that's the correct way to phrase it.... of the earthquake.

When all the technical talk about the Haiti earthquake was going on.....I read an article that was talking about the fact that the earthquake was so close to the surface contributed to the amount of destruction.....that most earthquakes were around 5 or more miles deep.

No, the earthquake wasn't strong.....and yes, there's no comparison between the construction in DeKalb County IL and Haiti.....but still the buildings in DeKalb county were/are not built with earthquakes in mind. I lived in that dorm for 3 years and I can promise you, when it was built back in the 60's ...it was not with earthquakes in mind. Tornadoes, yes...earthquakes, no.

I would think if an earthquake with a higher magnitude at that depth in that area.....would do a significant amount of damage.

It's an unexpected area for earthquakes.

I felt it close to Lakeshore.  I live on a busy street and thought it was a bus going by. Wierd thing, though- I thought they were extra early because I normally don't feel the shake until 6am-ish.
