Maybe its like everything else. They only have one way to do things and cannot adapt.

I have bought groceries often without saying a word other than "Fine, how are you?" and "Yes, that is all today" but I guess if you can't go through checkout without accusing the checker of being a puppet shill for the evil corporate ruling class, not being able to talk could be a problem.
