Dollar General to add 5,000 jobs, open 600 stores

GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Discount retailer Dollar General says it will add 5,000 jobs as it opens 600 new stores over the next 12 months.

Shoppers have flocked to discount stores during the recession as they look to spend less money on their purchases. During the first nine months of its fiscal year$, General's profit surged while revenue rose 13 percent to $8.61 billion.

The company, based in Goodlettsville, Tenn., says it will add job throughout its operations.

Dollar General says it added 4,000 jobs in 2009. It operates 8,800 stores with about 78,000 staffers.

1. It's a good store. Like the old "five and dimes" there used to be.

2. I like DG. They opened one about 3 mins from my house about a year ago.

I've never gotten anything there that I was unhappy with. The only problem I see is that most of those 5,000 jobs will be low pay.

10. according to one person I talked to there they would be better off working at wal-mart, and turnover is fairly high there. I don't shop at the local one any more though, since they decided to treat me like a shoplifter.

18. LOL

They are all full time jobs that pay at least $35,000 annually. They are complete with health care benefits and a pension plan.

They also have a strong union.

19. lol, i doubt it, from working in retail for years and seeing the employees there. Maybe regionally they pay 35k; but here, with the help they have, 25k at most.

8. They sell really terrible quality merchandise (and unhealthy food) at these places.

and this is a sign of a tanking economy. The only reason these stores are booming is that they are incredibly cheap, even cheaper than WallyWorld.

25. That's depressing news

They wouldn't add actual stores if they didn't think there were several years of sales to be made. It was bound to happen sooner or later, the investor class and the peons who serve them. Welcome to peon nation.

You know, this is just really odd.

To read the primitive comments, one has the impression that the economy has tanked.

But the primitives commented before January 20, 2009, that all would be fixed, that all would be happy and glorious, the minute il Duce Bo was our great leader.

January 20, 2009 was a long time ago now, and surely we all should be shopping at Nieman-Marcus as of many months ago.

One wonders what's up with that.

The two lamps on our headboard came from Dollar General.

  :p

I bought them for $10.00 each because they were the perfect size and shape.  Of course, I "personalized" them with my handy dandy gold leaf paint, etc. and now they look like a million bucks.

My point being, Dollar General is OK.

As for what they pay their employees, that is between the employee and Dollar General.  I don't care.

I go there all the time.  And, they are always hiring.  So, if you get canned from your job and need another one fast while you get on your feet, you can go visit your DG store.   Oh, but that would be a humiliating step down for a DUmmie with a PhD in music phillosophy (AoW spelling).  They'd rather lose the house.

The only thing I won't buy from them is girlie toiletries.  They water down the formulas and sell them on the cheap.

We have two Dollar General Stores in my town of 22,000. Then there's another one across the river in Colbert, OK., all within 10 minutes of me. I don't like going in there unless it's just a convenience factor. (Our downtown area has lost most of its stores and one of the DGs is located in the downtown area) Their prices aren't all that good, sometimes more expensive than the local Walmart.

DG is expanding because its a discount chain, DUmmies and libs hate for things to cost less unless its the governments free ponies. Usually one step away from becoming DG glue.

I love how a number of the posts lament the fact that these aren't high paying jobs.  If the minimum wage was set at $50/hour, the DUmmies would still find a way to bitch about it.

I shop there too.

For those women old enough to remember....they sell Bobbie Brooks clothes...warm ups, tops, some jackets. I have bought several items as it's the type of stuff I wear around the house. They go through the washing machine and dryer just fine!

I don't buy any toiletry or OTC med stuff items at DG, Dollar Tree or Big Lots without checking the label to see where they are made. I don't buy anything from China that's toiletry or food.

They are great places for cleaning supplies, candles, paper goods like plates, solo cups, aluminum foil, ziploc baggies, napkins, wrapping paper, etc.

I also get some food products there......

Probably jobs they've already been fired from and pissy because the company can expand without their advice.

What I don't understand is, libs often when trying to tell us how wonderful they and liberalism is, mention that thanks to them we have a minimum wage. Yet when people get that same min wage, that they brag about creating, they complain. Which tells me if we all get minimum health care like they want they will be bitching about that too.

I may not lock my doors while sitting at a red light and a black man is near, but I sure as hell grab on tight to my wallet when any democrats are close by.

For a lot of people in a lot of places Wal-Mart is the center of town. Your going to see people you know there. DG's are smaller and less trafficked.

I think DG is great for quick shopping. And it reminds me of the rural country stores we used to go to in Arkansas when I was a rug rat.
