He had already eaten the chicken that was on the uncooked chicken plate.  He left the left over chicken on the uncooked chicken plate, covered it and put it in the fridge.  I told him to throw it out to be safe rather than sorry.

That makes sense!  :)

  • Oh well, I wasn't using my civil liberties anyway.
I am a big 5 second rule fan.  Unless there is visible dog hair.  Then, I wash it off.  In one of the jobs I had, I had to read up on FDA standards, and well, after learning what I know is OK by govt standards, well, I don't give a care so much.

If y'all only knew what the tolerance level for feces and bugs was for vanilla ice cream....well you probably wouldn't eat it.

I haven't.  But I will eat a day old piece of bacon that has been dropped on the floor.
R.I.P. LC and Crockspot.  Miss you guys.

Still not the same as Salmonella.  I'll eat feces and bugs, in vanilla or any other flavor, before I'd take risk of getting salmonella poisoning.  Besides which, if we're going to start going down that route - you'd better start wearing HEPA filtered breathing masks when you go to the public loo - ever read about how much stuff gets aerosolized whenever the john gets flushed?

Oh now, I am with ya TOTALLY on the salmonella.  That is some bad crap to be true.   That Loo stuff? Yeah, that is some nasty crap.  (no pun intended.)

Note: ALWAYS close the lid before you flush.  ALWAYS.

Mythbusters or some other show on Discovery did a thing about human fecal bacteria spreading around the bathroom.

Some grocery store chains used to use the close dated chicken for their delis. I imagine that has changed some, especially with the turn over in deli foods now. But, if you ever see chicken or other meats in the fresh meat case that has BBQ rub or some other spice on it, think twice.  :-) It probably stopped looking fresh the day before and they're hiding it now.

Btw, BEG, how's the son doing today?

I had a boyfriend that worked in a chinese food takeout.  Told me never to order the fried rice, cuz that was where they put all their leftover stuff in.

Yeah, but what are you gonna do about everyone else who doesn't?  Slam the lid on their willies if they don't?

Now that would be fun, but I was referring to your personal bathrooms.  Where your toothbrush resides.

Even there, I don't know about your potty (and, to be frank, I really don't want to know, either :-) ), but mine doesn't come with an air-tight seal when I put the lid down, and we are talking aerosols here.

When I was little my dad worked for a meat packing company (Wilsons). He loved the steak that got a little brown as he said it made for the best steak in the world. BUT he never ever ate hotdogs because he saw what went into them.

That would be aged steak your dad was getting - and in restaurants one usually pays a premium for aged beef.  Good for your dad!

He sent me text this morning saying "so far so good".

I'm glad he is ok, cross contamination in the kitchen is very dangerous and people can get really sick or die from it.

Chicken is the greatest risk and some restaurants don't even use raw or fresh (unfrozen) because of the liability and risk.

Truer words have never been spoken. We spend far too much time in trying to negate the very capable immune system that God has blessed us with.

The surge in "anti-bacterial" this and that. The idea that bacteria are vermin and must be eradicated at all costs is simply laughable.

We try to hard to do what our systems are meant to do that we wind up crippling ourselves in the long run.

Grandpa's sayings, "You will eat a peck of dirt before you die"

At the supermarket check outs there are those little magazines about most everything.   I picked up one about the benefits of Apple Cider and found a few pages telling about the benefits of a few spoonfulls if one thinks they may have eaten bad food.    THEY claim that the acidity will kill most food derived illnesses.

First Holiday in Tenn. my MIL cooked up a storm, turkey, ham all the fixins. After the meal with the dishes and utensils removed she left all the food on the table and threw a sheet over it. No refrigeration for anything.

For the next 2 days everyone ate that food, except for me, Heck I like to starved to death amid all that bounty.  Got to realise this was a farm, people tracking in chicken, cow and goat poo on the bottom of their feet. People coming and going, coughing and sneezing, The food was uncovered for 6 or more hours a day as people need to eat.

No one got ill from the food, only problem was me as I was about to fight the rabbits for their bunny food.

It must take allot of foul ups before food becomes contaminated enough to make people ill.  Like a chain reaction, starting at the producers, then the method of transportation to the stores, say a freezer truck breaks down and the product begins to thaw out.   Then at the store, pallets left on a loading dock in very hot weather, then into the stores coolers that may have a problem keeping the temperature at the correct level.

Home to a kitchen where  the refrigerate may be an older model and without your knowledge the neighbors roaches have just found your house.  The trip home in a hot car or even one airconditioned takes 30 minutes. You carry in your bags of food and the phone rings, someone is at the front door.  After another 30 minutes finally you put away your food that you will serve to the family that has been frozen and partially defrosted 6-7 times.   At this point perhaps the cats or roaches have climbed all over your counters, gotten into the utensil draws.

It takes a massive amount of screw ups to cause food poisoning, in the case of your son, I would not worry too much, true he did mix and match cooked chicken with the raw stuff, he knows better now.

I would be more worried about a street vender or a pot luck Church dinner, we survive them with no problem.

Living life helps make the living immune to what makes us ill.  That's why no one in your story got sick.  That's also why we are not doing our children any favor by chasing them around with a pump of hand sanitizer and sterile towels.

Common sense is always the best, but sometimes it is taken to the extreme and becomes common absurdity.

Yet, comming of age in the Village it's still a common to practice on the raw birds. You just have to wash really good after you are done.

When I was in high school and college, going to my step-grandmother's in Iowa for Thanksgiving and Christmas....she would keep all the leftovers out on the back porch that was glassed in. The only thing that was put in the refrigerator was the apple salad. Everything else was in containers out on the porch. While it was cool, I don't know that it was "refrigerator" temperature.

Just hand over the chocolate...back away slowly...far away....and you won't get hurt....

Save the Earth... it's the only planet with chocolate.

Fridge temp is only 40°F.... When I lived up north, I would take advantage of the deck for extra freezer space, beer storage etc. Of course, I had to be careful that the beer didn't actually freeze.
