Do way too many people have too much money? Is that why
we as Dems are having such a hard time passing things like HC and jobs bills etc?

The reason I asked is because I just heard a news blurb about Avatar, a MOVIE, has made $1.8 BILLION so far! If things are so bad/, how do so many people afford to spend that kind of money?

Please don't think that I don't care about the unemployed and underemployed. That's not true. I've just been having a hard time understanding why so many people don't sem to care, and it seems like if the economy doesn't affect them directly, they just don't care!

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x7579600

Whenever democrats whine about people making too much and not giving it to them, it reminds me of Sen. Ernest Hollings, one of the vanishing breed of Deep South democrat senators. His accent and speech patterns made him sound like the model for Foghorn Leghorn. He once made that usual democrat complaint about people having too much takehome pay by famously saying, "There's too much consumin' goin' on out there."

1. to be fair, $8 for a movie isn't indicative
but i have a brother-in-law who has the cushiest job in history, travels the world on the company dime, and goes on gambling and golf junkets every few months. so some people definitely have too much. and some us, not near enough.

And of course DUmmies should decide how much is enough.

It's always dangerous when a DUmmy does math:

That's a LOT of people if you ask me!

not "too many"...

and these few control almost EVERYTHING for their own selfish benifit, damn the rest of us...
and, to be honest, I don't ever remember paying a BILLION DOLLARS to go to ONE ****ing movie, no matter how good it was said to be...

3. We live in a society of isolated consumers sold by the media...
on this middleclass ideal. Television teaches us that the poor are poor because they are stupid and lazy. The middle class, the prefered class, have beautiful houses full of wonderful things. So, we live our life in pursuit of wonderful things and have lost our link with each other.

Our world is all bread and circus, both provided by the media and big corporations that make an endless stream of new must have gadgets.

Yep, by George, I do. This circus is great! Pass the bread, please.

Although I've long thought the economy is geared towards the top 40% and they can still spend $8 on a ticket.

14. Hehehe.... yeah, I'm one of the 90% employed of which you speak.....
I'm makine a WHOLE $9.00/hour now (way less than I made 25 years ago with a salary, benefits, AND the company paid for my school expenses).....
oh, but I'm 'employed' now. But, forgetting all of that, let's do some 'math' now, shall we?

$9.00/hour x 40 hours = $360.00
$360.00 x 52 (weeks in a year) = $18,720

WOW, I'm RICH!!!!!
Shoulda studied up for that drug test at the original job.

Many people spend money on small (Often faddish) things, repeatedly, especially the young. It adds up.

Will your daughter ask for a tat like Cyrus's: Miley Cyrus' Tattoo On Her Chest (under left breast for Christ's sake) says "Just Breathe." Just freaking breathe! Genius I tell yah.

It frightens me to think that in their mind, I'm "filthy rich", and yet when I look at what kind of hours I have to put in to make that "filthy rich" money, I only get to take one 3-day vacation every other year.

What they want is everyone living as slaves on the plantation.  Of course, the folks they idiotically vote in to bring about their socialist dream would not be living the same way.  They seem to be okay with the notion of the slave owners deserving more.

Waaayyyy back in 1978 I remember hearing about a study that was done that showed that often during tough economic times movie and book revenues increase because both are escapist entertainment where one can for a short time forget one's financial woes. Kind of ironic since during that period of the 70's we had another "wonderful" dim pres.

The filthy rich, unlike the filthy broke, can take a bath and cure half their problem.
“The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of ‘liberalism’, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.” - Norman Thomas, U.S. Socialist Party presidential candidate 1940, 1944 and 1948

We have a place that is cheap.  The Avon Theater is one of the few classic type movie movie houses, only 3 screens, and they're bigger than the ones at the multiplexes.

It seems like job mobility and television have nearly destroyed regional accents and dialects. When I was a kid, we could detect accent differences in people from just maybe 50 miles away. A southern accent only sounded like a southern accent to a yankee. To another southerner it could almost identify your county. I'm sure it was the same for accents among yankees. Except for the most remote rural areas, that seems to have disappeared from all but the very elderly.

I had no idea people actually thought that way until I started listening to Rush nearly 20 years ago.

Of course now the examples of it are on display daily at the DUmp.

As most here know, I work part time at the Home Depott. 98% of what they sell comes from China, the Phillipines, Mexico, or Tiawian. Nothing, and I mean nothing, is "made in America"  any more! You can thank the Union Wage for that! When you get paid over $30 an hour for puttin' on lug nuts, somethin' has been lost in the skills dept. Why should we pay one of these Union thugs $30 when we can get the same work for $1/day? Hell, just ask Nike or Kathy Gifford.

No doubts in my mind union thugs putting on thirty-dollar lugs are partially responsible for the loss of manufacturing jobs in America.  That said, let me regale you with my latest hardware purchase.

Several years ago I purchased three boxes of metal shelving from Wally World.  They were sturdy and “Made in the USA”.  Several days ago I purchased two more units from the same Wally World (and still “Made in the USA”).  When I opened the first box I determined these units were not the same quality as the initial units. I managed to built the first unit (although it was a pain in the a$$) but I was really unhappy with the lack of quality.  When I opened the second unit it had missing pieces.  I took this unit back, obtained a refund, and stopped at Lowe’s on the way home.  They had assembled models (also Made in the USA) on display the same size as my other units.  I bought one of these units which was simple to build, held twice the weight, and, cost twice as much.  I guess you get what you pay for even when it is "Made in the USA" (but not always).

Today the unions are losing ground in the manufacturing sector while gaining in the public sector.  It appears the unions will do for the public employee what they have done for those in manufacturing.   I know my town employee costs are becoming unsustainable largely due to unions. Inflated union wages do not guarantee quality.

(Don't waste your breath trying to tell a liberal unions are the problem, they know it is the evil corporations and Bush.)

I stopped at Lowe's because it was on my way back from Wally World, Home Despot is across town but would have been next on my list.
