Fast foods and rip offs
« on: January 26, 2010, 09:32:17 AM »
I find it is not the comunity being ripped off, the food is good and fast.

What is the problem for the workers.

A friend has worked at Crispy Cream for 3 years and one day find they cannot cash their pay check on the acount written,     They have to go to one of those chech cashing places that charge $5,00 to cash it.

One can storm, stamp their feet and yell at the job but one only get, is  this is compancy policy.   Or -----There are 15 people waiting in line for your job, they will take what the can get.

What is going on. the fast food resurents need laborers, those willing to work split shifts and managers that can order the need for any day of the week.

To issue a pay check that has to be taken to anyplace that charges for the check to be be cashed is unreal.

Around here, you can only get a paycheck cashed if you have an account at that bank, or take the check to the bank it is drawn on.

Some of the grocery stores will cash them up to $1000 only....and I think some are starting to charge for it.

Runnin' Buddy's son was trying to cash a paycheck on a Sunday and having a heck of a time because the check was over 30 days old......it was a paycheck from a well-established private restaurant chain here...and no one would cash it. It was less than a $100! The restaurant would even cash it!!! (Copper Cellar Corp/Calhoun's)

I give checks to people, who have been foreclosed on,  in exchange for them moving out, leaving the property "broom clean" and giving me their keys. It is a bank check from Florida, and I have had them tell me that they can't get the check cashed because it's over $1000 and they don't have bank accounts.

Way back when I worked a normal day shift, a bunch of us would go for beers on Fridays and the bar we went to cashed checks for a $1.  When I worked nights and got off at midnight, my wife and I would go to one bar and the owner  was there every night.  He would cash my check at closing time without any charge for it.

When I worked at a grocery store when I was in high school they would cash my check but I have never tried to cash a check since then. I have only deposited checks in my bank account since then.

Most banks these days will not cash any check unless it is their own bank or you have an account for deposit....as they put a "hold" on the check for a couple of days if it isn't theirs.

I was an asst mgr at a Pizza shop that was notorious for cutting it close with their payroll.  I knew better than to deposit their checks, because they would bounce.  So, since it was my job to hit the bank as soon as it opened, on Saturday, which was payday.  (Making deposit)  I would bring my check in for them to cash first thing.  I never had a problem after that.

I don't understand the American fascination with checks (cheques ?)...

Here - When it comes to wages , If you aren't paid in cash (which is getting far less common) the money is transferred electronically into your account.

Checks are still used - I get a couple of dividend payments in check form for some stocks but with the prevalence of EFT/POS equipment and commonality of internet banking , the check is going out like the horse drawn cart.

Same here, my salary is electronically deposited into my checking account.  And we are definetly leaning towards a cash-less society.  I also have my W-2 sent to my work account electronically.  I still write checks for some things...but the majority of my expenses are all handled electronically.  I also use my debit card a lot. I don't carry nearly as much cash as I did in the past.

Well, in regards to that story above, that was about 20 years ago (Lord, I am old)  Now, the company I work for has about 750 employees, here onsite.  We have about 80% with EFT deposits.  20% get real checks.  Some of them get them because their credit is so ruined they cannot get a bank account.  Some of them get them, because they want to have their check cashed before they get home, so they can stash some aside, and some just like the paper check and the process of going to the bank to deposit one.

On the rare occasion I receive a check, it sits in my wallet for a good long time before I muster up the patience to deposit it.

I was talking back in the 80's.  My husband has had his salary electronically deposited for years.  When we do get a check though, like for Christmas (my husband's parents and my Dad gave us money via check) I deposit it.  I haven't "cashed" a check since the 80's.

I have SEVEN checks I need to deposit and I've had 6 of them since Christmas and the other one for about two months.  It's a lot of money too, I'm just lazy.  They have no drive through Bank of America's around here, I don't want to go in the bank....that is how lazy I am.

eh, I won't go to the drive through on Saturday, if it has been open for an hour or two, because the line is too long.  I don't go on my lunch break, because I don't want to sit in a line for my lunch break.

I would, apparently, prefer to get hollered at by my MOM long distance for not depositing her checks in a timely fashion.   ::)

I don't like to go into my bank because it gets robbed on a fairly frequent basis.  ::) I have yet to figure out why, except it is free standing in a very small commercial area surrounded by residential.

Guess the robbers figure they can get a way easily with it in a residential area.....they obviously don't check it out very well.....they keep getting caught within a few hours.  :mental:

My Dad is the same way. If his bank statement comes and I haven't cashed the check yet he bitches and whines daily until I do. To him it's like the end of the world if his account doesn't resolve to the precise penny that very day.

I have had them tell me that they can't get the check cashed because it's over $1000 and they don't have bank accounts.

weird.

I do not have a bank account and I have cashed two $2900 checks in the past 6 months at a Checks Cashed places, they charge a bit but I need my money.

My pay is electronically deposited...but I also have a portion sent to a college savings, and could add several other accounts - like a savings account.  We have online access to the "deposits" section, so I could change the amounts if I chose.  I really like that, I never even see the money until I check the college account statement.

I don't think I've had a regular paper paycheck in over 20 years.  Even expense checks were direct deposit.

Dunno about the Navy, I assume it was all the military.  I think they were light years ahead of everyone else, with EFT.  When my Mom and Dad divorced, the child support was directly funded from the Air Force.  And that was like a bazillion years ago.   It doesn't surprise me that they would be the first to embrace that technology.

They were switching over when I was in Power School.  By the time I got to my first boat, it was mandatory.  Can't say I blame them--imagine being out at sea on a deployment but you've got no money.  That would be teh suck.

Over the past 15 to 20 years alot of places that used to cash checks have been hit with fraud due to high quality bogus checks being printed with home computers.

I knew of one grocery store chain that got hit for over $10,000 in just one day, at one location.

There was even a whole ring of bogus check cashers that were on the run after taking another store for over $100,000.....

Don't blame the fast food industry, blame the criminals!
