My neighbor just rammed home to me what is wrong with America.

The dirt road next to his house is a little bit flooded, maybe just puddled even though we are on a slope. One of the neighbors and he decided to dig a ditch across the road to drain the water. I said what he needed was a culvert or pipe under the road. Additional rain storms would only erode a ditch creating a bad road and then I asked who was responsible for maintaining the road anyway. He said we and the neighbors were because all the roads from the main road were private roads. So I said we needed to get someone professional who knew what they were doing because drainage was also involved.

Then I sarcastically added that this must be the Libertarian paradise everyone likes like Haiti. Then he asked me if they were still killing each other. He must be watching local news which is run by Fox. To which I said that they were dying because in their Libertarian paradise they have no building codes or much infrastructure like police to keep things orderly. I also added that the USA was responsible for much of the poverty and misery that Haiti has endured even before the earthquake. What made him think that all that was happening was that they were killing each other?

Then I said that the problem around here is that there aren't enough road and building codes to keep erosion from happening. Fools with property don't seem to know what they are doing and what should and shouldn't be planted or built in various localities. To that he answered to me that he was only interested in what was going on within his fence, on his property and his life. All the rest of it is of no interest to him. Now this is no dummy. He went to college, medical school and completed his internship and residency to become a medical doctor. Most of the time he's a good guy and cares about other people. He made a point of calling me up to see if I was all right when our electricity went out for a day even though he was visiting with family.

But this is the core problem with Americans. They don't give a damn about what is going on beyond their fence. That's why we are being swallowed whole by criminal enterprises that are doing their wholesale piracy on us legally.

I GIVE UP!!!

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x7556614

And well you should give up...it'll be safer for you.

Ya know--DUmbass--by constraining his concerns to what goes on inside his fence he makes sure he isn't concerning himself what goes on inside my fence.

And as soon as the gov't starts telling people what trees to plant and where you'd better believe the arboretum lobby will kick into high-gear.

Haiti was hardly libertarian, it was almost as corrupt as the Democrats

From the thread's title at the DUmp, "My neighbor just rammed home to me what is wrong with America", I thought it might be a story about the long lost benburch, but it isn't. Instead, it's just a bouncy intended to make the DUmp believe DUmmy Cleita lives somewhere nice enough to have a doctor as a neighbor. It's a greenbriaresque bragging lie, but it inspires two secondary bouncies:

8. I just had a similar conversation with a friend today.
She noticed that an older woman at the store couldn't get her trunk opened to put in her groceries. Tons of people were around, but nobody bothered to help her until my friend did. She asked me "what the hell is WRONG with people, that they can't just stop for one minute to help someone else???"

We are selfish, self-centered naval-gazing assholes.

10. I hear you. A few years ago we had a major problem with forest fires in our area
(mostly caused by "prescribed burns"). Some got so out of control that they were burning down homes in some communities. I mentioned to a friend that a community not far from her had been affected and I wondered if any relief efforts had been organized for the uninsured who had lost everything. She said "Oh, I don't know. If it's not happening in my own backyard I really don't give a crap." that right there says it all.

These people are so DUmb! Not one of them understands that DUmmy Cleita's only purpose was to brag!

Considering in some liberal enclaves, they already do that...

I don't know about where this DUmmie lives but here in Texas when you buy property that has private roads to several homes you have to sign a Private Road Maintenance Agreement at closing that says you understand you are buying property located on a private road and that those who live on the road are responsible for the maintenance.

If that is the case where the DUmmie lives (which I imagine is the case because the neighbor knew it was a private road) then WHO is the dumb one?

Who owns the private road, thats what I'd like to know. I wouldn't sign unless I have a deed on it or shares in a holding corp that owned it. Plus if the neighbors have multiple cars and I have one and rarely have visitors, then I'd want them to pay more. Thats just me.

Legally, it would be considered a 'common easement', meant to facilitate access to everybody's property.  What that means is that the property you are taxed for extends out to the centerline of the roadway, but the portion of your property incorporated into the easement must be accessible by all property holders on that road.

Of course you are right though; you could always NOT BUY the property in question.

If it weren't a bouncy, I'd feel for the poor neighbors; having to put up with the crazy old leftist next door. Despite the rants, the doc still checks up on her in spite of all the constant bitching and moaning. She probably ran out to scream at them when they undertook fixing their problem instead of looking for a government agency to do it.

A "bouncy" used to mean a make-believe story about a primitive converting a Republican or conservative to primitivity, but over the years it got kind of less and less specific, and so now a "bouncy" is usually any tale the primitives tell, that obviously isn't true.

common easement? That sounds like public property.

Not necessarily.  In my last house, which was part of an HOA, the streets were common property--we, not the city, were responsible for upkeep.  The deeds to all the houses in the development stated that very clearly.

You don't have to belong to an HOA for such sticky ownership/common use issues to crop up.  Where I grew up in Washington (state), many of the towns measured property limits similarly (i.e. from the centerline of the adjoining road). Yeah, you own it out to the middle of the road, and yeah you're paying taxes on the land all the way out to that centerline, but as the government needs access to your property in order to provide you with it's services (postal service, Fire/Police/Medical etc.) they'll maintain (pave, plow, etc) the common easement portion of your property that is mandated for you to be a part of this community.

Don't like it?  Don't live there.

Fascism / HOA, really not that much of a difference except the size of the organization.

You should not be able to bind future owners of a property, that is totalitarian. Especially allowing the neighbors to control it, thats just evil. Control freaks are everywhere though.

They were originally created for the condo/townhome type communities where one building houses several separate units.  Their purpose was for upkeep to the exterior of the buildings and also any amenities on the grounds (pool, weight room, club house, ect) that were shared ownership by everyone in the community.   HOAs in some cases are useful but much like the government have overstepped their bounds and the egomaniacs in charge use them to propel their self absorbed ideas and egos.

But when "shared" ownership comes to mean you don't own it, just pay for it, then it has crossed the line.

Yes, the reasoning behind it is that these facilities are conveniences and you don't have to fork out money to buy your own.  So it's basically the HOA is a "membership fee" for these things and are close in proximity to your home.  So basically, yes it's the pure definition of convenient communism.  I personally laugh my ass off at people that are willing to buy homes in communities like this and pay anywhere from $50 - $200 a month for this crap.

How about I buy the land, built the road and charge everyone else for using it. Good old capitalism.

The old fashion American Way.

I have decided to borrow $150 million from the government at 3.15% over 99 years, for the purpose of stimulus and general job creation.

I want to buy the Jackson Ranch in Lampassas County, TX. Its gorgeous and is next to a state park and real close to Ft Hood too. I plan to build a small city of self-determined capitalists and treat the 9,300+ acres and the state park as our own kingdom.

No HOA's. Who is with me?
