Finally, finally, finally!!!
« on: January 22, 2010, 07:12:22 PM »
I have been an out-of-work chemist for three months, and in that time I have been teaching myself computer programming languages and architecture. All the hard work, and occasional feelings of desperation, has paid off. I now have, in spite of my B.S. degree in Forensic Chemistry, my foot in the door of a major IT help-desk company here in Austin. I just want to thank all of you on this board who have sent encouraging messages over the last few months, and provided potential leads in this industry.

I can finally consider myself, once again, a productive member of society.  :cheersmate:

I guess...or it could be that my brothers and my dad are in the computer industry and have helped me determine the most useful areas to study. They have also been extremely helpful in answering all the questions I came up with when I was studying.

Hee, hee.  What a language that was - you've probably saved yourself from getting permanently warped by not learning it.  Speaking of which, anyone ever learn COBOL, or Pascal?

You're a chemist?  And you were out of work in Austin??  Dude ... wouldn't it have been easier to set up a lab and make some meth or crack for the liberals??!!

Gots to roll with the flow.

You could have been retired by now.

No, my friends, there’s only one really progressive idea. And that is the idea of legally limiting the power of the government. That one genuinely liberal, genuinely progressive idea — the Why in 1776, the How in 1787 — is what needs to be conserved. We need to conserve that fundamentally liberal idea. That is why we are conservatives. --Bill Whittle

My stepsister is a COBOL developer for Frito Lay.

Congrats, cclan.  I have a friend with a degree in chemistry that now works as a network security consultant and makes some pretty good money.  Strange how that happens.

It helps to have technical experts in the family...I learn best by asking a lot of questions and building my knowledge base by understanding why things work the way they do. It takes very patient people to spend their valuable time providing the information. Thankfully, I have those patient people in my family.

I learned COBOL.  I don't know how much I remember, but I took COBOL programming in College.

Congratulations, but I'm confused about the job market.

Chemistry is one of the hard sciences.

Few people go into chemistry because it's not easy.

On the other hand, there seems a big demand for people who know chemistry.

Hell, cclanofirish, when you were over at our old home, and mentioned that as your major a few years ago, I thought, "Well, this is one person who's never going to lack for a well-paying job."

What's with the job market on chemists?

Austin, TX has very limited opportunities for chemists fresh out of college. I could move to other states and find potential jobs, but I am a family man first...and I am dating someone that I don't want to give up quite yet...
