ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — The United States recognizes that the Taliban are now part of the political fabric of Afghanistan, Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates said here on Friday, but the group must be prepared to play a legitimate role before it can reconcile with the Afghan government.

I think this idea originated farther up the chain of command.  I remember Lord Zero saying something about making overtures to the Taleeban.

Y'all need to be exploiting the taliban members a little more.  First turn them into slave labor, work them to death, then fill the compost piles.  I'm thinking they make excellent butchers at a US run pig farm just outside of kabul.
