The former presidential candidate alleges that illegal and malicious tactics were used to keep him off the 2004 ballot in Maine and elsewhere.Former presidential candidate Ralph Nader has filed a lawsuit in a Washington County court against the Democratic National Committee and others, alleging that illegal and malicious tactics were used to keep him off the 2004 ballot in Maine and elsewhere.The complaint was filed in Washington County Superior Court, according to the Bangor Daily News. But why there? And why now?Nader's attorneys told the paper that one reason is because Maine has a six-year window for filing legal complaints. The case was originally filed in Washington, D.C., but was dismissed in 2007 because a three-year statute of limitation there had expired.Maine is also one of the places where Nader claims that Democratic party officials engaged in such tactics to keep him off the ballot. But Democratic officials dispute that. Arden Manning, Executive Director of the Maine Democratic Party, told the paper that it's legal in Maine and elswhere to challenge petition signatures filed to get a candidate or issue on the ballot."To argue that there was a vast conspiracy against Ralph Nader is laughable," the paper quotes Manning as saying. "The truth is Ralph Nader lacked the support to qualify for the ballot." Manning was not working for Maine Democratic party in 2004.Efforts to keep Nader off the 2004 ballot failed in Maine, where he garnered one percent of the vote.The complaint alleges that the defendants harmed Nader's professional reputation by falsely accusing him of fraud, and damaged the structure under which third-party or independent candidates can run for president. The defendants are also accused of harassing or causing financial harm to Nader supporters, including those in Maine. ...
