Popular kids’ trinkets loaded with toxic metal
Barred from using lead, Chinese makers using more dangerous cadmium

LOS ANGELES - Barred from using lead in children's jewelry because of its toxicity, some Chinese manufacturers have been substituting the more dangerous heavy metal cadmium in sparkling charm bracelets and shiny pendants being sold throughout the United States, an Associated Press investigation shows.

The most contaminated piece analyzed in lab testing performed for the AP contained a startling 91 percent cadmium by weight. The cadmium content of other contaminated trinkets, all purchased at national and regional chains or franchises, tested at 89 percent, 86 percent and 84 percent by weight. The testing also showed that some items easily shed the heavy metal, raising additional concerns about the levels of exposure to children.

Cadmium is a known carcinogen. Like lead, it can hinder brain development in the very young, according to recent research.

<snip>

Some of the most troubling test results were for bracelet charms sold at Walmart, at the jewelry chain Claire's and at a dollar store. High amounts of cadmium also were detected in "The Princess and The Frog" movie-themed pendants.

Ok, I'll risk being labeled a racist but here it goes... China is a culture with zero ethics. Contracts are suggestions not binding. If you make a contract for 100 units for 100 dollars at the day of delivery the manufacture might show up with 80 inferior units and perhaps not what you asked for (such as made of lead, cadmium, and rat poison, assuming they are making a candy bar for you) and still demand the 100 dollars.

Laws are also just a suggestion. If there is a "legal" dispute, you have to bribe the local official to interpret the law. Yes, he with the most money wins. Oh yeah, there is no such thing as intellectual property in China. I could go on and on but I'll save that for a later day.

We do business with them why?

:cheersmate:

Couldn't agree with you more.  However, somewhere down the line we hit some kind of disconnect, where people prefer quantity over quality, and don't know how (or care to)to save up to buy a good, quality good.  Hence, we have a whole mess of inferior products, made with who knows what, built to last a lifespan of a month on the good side.

Oh, I could go on and on and on, but you know what I mean.   :banghead:

Until people QUIT demanding  cheaper prices and start demanding QUALITY, we will continue to make China more wealthy. Between our industries moving to Mexico and elsewhere's overseas, our industries are doomed. Of course, the American public accepts mediocrity as the norm. It's OUR fault and until we do something about it, nothing will change.

Guess we're all doomed now that we've been putting cadmium-plated screws and bolts into our houses as well...  :yawn:
