If you're driving a car through an intersection, and another car is about to hit you, do you:

a).- Slam on the brakes and brace for impact

b).- floor the accelerator and try to get out of the way.

Damn maneuverable boats those whaling trawlers.

76. If you look at the video, there's an interesting observation to be made.

There's a pretty good wake behind the bat boat for a while as they boast to each other that they slowed down the Japanese boat and "made it ****ing zig zag".

Then for 10-20 seconds there's not much wake. The boat's idling. It's moving, just more slowly. It's hard to gauge absolute movement at sea without looking at a fixed point or actually seeing where the stern or bow touch the water, or the wake.

Meanwhile the whaling boat comes barreling down on them. Now, given the way it looks, you'd think the boat's moving at least 30-40 miles an hour and approaching from a great distance. It's probably not moving that quickly, and when we first see it it's probably not as far away as it looks.

40 mph? Really?

I'll be the first to admit that my heteronormativity has prevented me from enlisting in the naval services but even I know 40 mph is a rather fantastic claim for a ship's speed.

I think our nuclear powered larger surface vessels cap out at 30 to 35 knots (published).

The Moonbats hoped to throw their lil boat in front of the ship to make it swerve. It, like most moonbatty plans FAILED. Mr Japanese Whaling Ship just didn't give 2 shits about a boat full of moonbats/pirates that it was actively trying to repel and ran it over when it threw itself in the way.

Pretty simple really, unless you're a DUmmie.

Knots are actually nautical miles per hour and a nautical mile is 1,000 feet longer than a statute mile, so 40 mph is somewhere around 32 or 33 knots.  Still a speed only smugglers and warships normally are designed to make, since speed costs money and commercial vessels are designed to make money, not burn it.

Ships don't turn on a dime, the lighter vessels in the Japanese fishing fleet are 'Maneuverable' relative to the bigger ships, but like icebergs compared to small craft like the bat-boat.

1 knot = 1.15 mph, so 35 knots is 40 mph.

Oh, I was was giving the correct mathematical formula to convert knots to mph and vice versa, that's all.  I agree and would guess that whaling vessels of that size might get up to 22 knots or so, but that's about it.

Yeah, exactly my point too, USA4ME, except I didn't look up the correct conversion first and somewhat misremembered the difference between nautical and statute miles.  Commercial vessels aren't built to go any faster than the economics of their use would dictate as productive, because every additional knot raises the power requirement and thus cost on a logarithmic curve, not a straight line.

There isn't much of anything that size that has an economics-based reason to top out at 35 knots or better, generally even a 'Fast' commercial vessel translates to something in that 22 knot ballpark.  Even in the days when people whose time was money traveled by ocean liner from one continent to another, the fast liners operated with about a 25-27 knot top end, and only a few very top-shelf, state-of-the-art premium price ones went faster.

Yep--only warships which aren't overly concerned about fuel consumption are generally capable of anything more than 20-25 kts, and even then, we'll generally travel from point A to point B at well under that.  Even the Ady Gil has a "cruise" speed of 20 knots.

That being said, looking at the video I saw, it was pretty clear that the smaller boat was the burdened vessel and required to avoid collision, while the whaling ship was required to maintain course and speed, and did so up to the point where it was pretty apparent the green dipshits were trying to ram her.

But a question I have for the DUmmies lurking--knowing what we know about the relationship between speed and fuel consumption, it's not very "green" of ya'll to be running around in a boat at 50 knots, knowwhutImeanVern?

If I was the captain of that ship...I'd simply explain that I thought they were pirates and therefore was doing everything I could to prevent them from boarding and taking my crew hostage.

When I was stationed at NAS Pax River, I did a lot of boating on the Chesapeake Bay.  There is a whole lot of ship traffic going up to Baltimore.  I always went but the simple rule that the biggest boat wins.  Even when sailing, you give way to 100 ton ships, not the other way around.

You see, I don't care you how feel.  I really don't.  More importantly, neither does anyone else.  Only about 200 people on a planet of 7 billion actually care about your feelings, and that's if you're lucky.  The sooner you grasp this lesson, the better off you will be.  And since almost no one gives a damn what you do, say, think, or feel, appealing to your feelings when you encounter differences of opinion is not only illogical, but useless.

There are rules of the seas and the (moon)bat broke them.  Case is closed.

Spot on Doc, bigger ship theory because you can't sue if your are dead.

For the moonbats that think piloting a ship is like driving you have never done it. One does not steer a boat, one guides it.

When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

Their main ship is named the "Bob Barker" after the former Price is Right host who donated the $5K they needed to purchase it.

I meant that this particular PR stunt, driving into the whaling ship, has probably brought in more than enough donations to replace the ship and pay the lawyer to sue the whaling ship too.

A little background on the "heroic" Sea Shepherd crew:

According to Ecorazzi.com, a self-proclaimed "green" gossip site, the group revealed it was using a "photonic disruptor" against the whaling crew. According to WickedLasers.com says that particular laser has been featured on another Discovery Channel program - "Future Weapons" - and it can "temporarily overwhelm a threat's visual senses."

But on the very same page are indications, such as the pirate logo on the Deleted Scenes button and on the caps worn by the crew, that the eco-activists are up to something less benign.

Paul Watson, founder of the Sea Shepherd Society, has publicly said mankind is a "virus" and we need to "re-wild the planet." In a May 4, 2007 editorial, Watson said "We are killing our host the planet Earth" and refused to apologize for having called human beings the "AIDS of the Earth."

He called for a population reduction to less than 1 billion people. The world population is nearly 6.8 billion as of Dec. 23, 2009. Watson also called for humans to return to primitive lifestyles. "We need to stop flying, stop driving cars, and jetting around on marine recreational vehicles. The Mennonites survive without cars and so can the rest of us."

As for the "Whale Wars," there is already a worldwide moratorium on commercial whaling, but Japan continues to run a scientific whaling program. In February 2009, the Los Angeles Times wrote about a "bitter face-off" in Japan over whaling between Greenpeace activists and the Japanese government.

"These men have been painted as heroes," Joji Morishita said on behalf of the Japanese government. According to that article, 100 whales are "culled by Japan each winter." Norway and Iceland also "cull a limited number."

While the Japanese 'Research program' is a thinly-disguised fishery take for food (I'll believe it's really science when they don't freeze or can and then sell the 'Specimens'), I'm not a whale-worshipper so it's really no skin off my nose as long as it isn't endangering them as a species.

I like to use Whale Wars and the Sea Shepherd crew as examples of small group leadership teaching young officers...as BAD examples, that is!   :-)  "Watch the show, and don't do it the way those idiots do it."

Off topic:  I was getting ready this morning and a commercial for South Beach diet came on the tv. I thought it said, "On South Beach lose whales.".  It came on again a few minute ago, it said weight not whales. Would it be brillant if they actually used whales. I bet you the thought crossed their mind.  :p

There is no virtue in compulsory government charity, and there is no virtue in advocating it. A politician who portrays himself as caring and sensitive because he wants to expand the government's charitable programs is merely saying that he is willing to do good with other people's money. Well, who isn't? And a voter who takes pride in supporting such programs is telling us that he will do good with his own money— if a gun is held to his head.
