First Friday

It was the coldest morning of the year here, only 7 degrees when I got up to let the dog out.  She didn't stay out too long.

Didn't get to sleep until the wee hours of the morning. I have a pork roast in the oven and we are working slowly towards preparing dinner. Black eyed peas, cabbage, roasted red potatoes, & a pork roast. The sun is out and it appears to be the start of a good day, with one exception.

Even though my 9 yr old was up until at least 1 last night, he' was up bright and early at his usual time this morning.  He oughta be a peach to be around later today!

My older son and his friend slept the morning away...finally kicked them outta bed at 12 because I need to do laundry, and they were sleeping downstairs.

Ham is in the oven, black eyed peas ready to toss in there in a few.

Planning a definite lazy day today!

Well, thundley, considering it's the FIRST day of the year, it is therefore both the coldest AND warmest, by default.

:rimshot:

It's about 32° right now, even with the sun out.  The damn battery on my car was dead when I went out there.  I think I may have left something on.  I'll let it trickle charge tonight after I get home from work.  At least I'm off tomorrow... yay Saturday.

THE LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM THAT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE SNOW TODAY AND TONIGHT WILL DEEPEN RAPIDLY AS IT MOVES WELL TO THE EAST OF THE AREA. THE LOW WILL THEN MOVE BACK TO THE COAST SATURDAY AND SUNDAY. AS THE LOW APPROACHES... HEAVY SNOW AND GUSTY WINDS ARE POSSIBLE DURING THIS TIME. Dear ol' Dad came over today and helped me with some house projects. We took off the arcadia door and cleaned out the gunk and crap that was keeping it from opening. I have no idea what the previous homeowner tried to do but to get that door open, you had to put your whole body into it. It was like they had put some kind of sticky grease in the track. It was nasty.

We got a new curtain rod up in the master bedroom and started demolishing the hot tub in the backyard. I got to take a sledge hammer to it. Now that was kind of fun. Dad's going to have to bring a saw to cut it up into pieces to get it out of the ground. And the surrounding concrete is going to be a bitch to remove. Slowly but surely, though, things are coming along.

Before the sun sets, I think I might go do a little yard work in the backyard. I've been having nightmares about this. Living in an apartment for nearly 7 years totally spoiled me. LOL.

Ah, the joys of home ownership.  :-)

Have 10lbs of pork loin in the roaster with sauerkraut and some onions. Boiling new potatoes to do that smashed on a cookie sheet thing. Shrimp is defrosting, and I have cinnamon apples and bread pudding to make.

Runnin' Buddy and her husband are bringing the greens and hopping john....this midwesterner has no clue how to make them....and husband is making fried cornbread - his momma's recipe...

I think there will be 12 of us for dinner and watching football.....what an awesome way to start out the New Year!

I picked up a pork butt yesterday.  I'm off tomorrow, so I'll probably roast it tonight.

Recipes would be appreciated.  I was going to brush it with barbecue sauce and some kind of rub (paprika, pepper, brown sugar) and slow-roast it in an open pan at about 200°.

I think I am "cooked out"....

One load of dishes is in the dishwasher and there are probably 2 more loads rinsed and ready to go in...all the food is put up.

We had enough for a small army..(we expected 6 more to be here for dinner)..but by the time we split up the leftovers it isn't quite so bad.

I will say that my bread pudding looks gorgeous...though M said he thought milk chocolate might have been better than dark ( :whatever: )....and the orange Cointreau cream sauce I made up as I went along turned out..

One child is asleep on the floor in front of fire....other one is on couch wrapped in a snuggie...M's throroughly disgusted with Sugar Bowl (he's a Cincy alum) and my bed is calling me.

Hope everyone had a very lovely start to the New Year and that it will continue throughout the year~~

This is the first time I have actually been on my computer in about two weeks.  My kids have totally taken over.  They need to go back to school so I can get back to my normal life of doing laundry and being on the computer during the day.  For some reason I can't do laundry when people are home.  I finally had to just go ahead and do some today because we were running out of underwear and jeans.  I did do towels for the past two weeks but those don't count.

My vision is getting MUCH better but my right eye isn't back to where it was before the UVeitis.  If it is going to stay where it's at then I am ok with it as I can actually read signs now when I'm driving.  I couldn't read signs with my glasses a couple of weeks ago.

My son left monday to ride with a friend back to Dallas. :( This is the son of some friends of ours (the husband works for my husband) and he and my son have been friends since they were little kids.  His friend is moving back to Dallas because he didn't like it here (he is starting college in Dallas). My son wanted to see his friends so we flew him out here and have his flight back to Cleveland out of DFW.  My parents drove out for Christmas and left monday too and they followed my son and his friend back so it made me feel a lot better.  My step dad is retired but does dealer trades for a Ford dealership right around the corner from where I used to live.  He was picking up a new Taurus for the dealership out in Anaheim.

My moonbat brother came as well.  He came a couple of days before my parents got there.  He is such a selfish bastard.  The day my parents came I was making homemade spaghetti and meatballs and my hands were practically elbow deep the hamburger mixing the meatballs when he said sarcastically, "It's not like you have to entertain me, it's not like I'm bored or anything.".  I swear I hadn't even sat down the first two days he was there and he was telling me that he needed to be entertained.   Then later that night I sat up talking to him (actually being talked at because I did not get a chance to say anything), he told me my brother Mark is the lucky one because he is no longer alive (he died back in July of 2008) and so he doesn't have to worry about paying his mortgage and bills.  I couldn't friggen believe he said that.    I told him how sick it was and I bet Mark would beg to differ is he was alive. What I wanted to say was, "You don't have to worry about paying your bills either, you live with Dad (he has lived with my dad for over 7 years) and filed for bankruptcy".  Then later he told me that he still owed $57k in student loans but makes $34k working for Kinkos/Fed Ex (he has worked for kinkos for well over 10 years but doesn't want any more "responsibility"  ::) ).  I'm not knocking making $34k, it's that he has already filed for bankruptcy (and he owed a TON in CC bills from gambling and buying photography equipment) and he has an additional $57k in student loans.  He is irresponsible.  He admitted he always thought he would either win the lottery, cash in big at the casinos or my grandma would leave him money when she dies.  He said my cousins don't deserve what they make (one is a pediatric oncologist and the other one is a radiology specialist) because basically it's the medical field and they shouldn't be taking advantage of patients.   His degree is in photography but he isn't doing anything with it.  He refuses to do weddings or take pictures of people, he wants to make "art"....coffee table books.   :whatever:  It didn't take the $57k to go to school either, he borrowed the maximum he could borrow and what it didn't cost to go to school he gambled (he told me that) but now he is screwed because you can't file bankruptcy on student loans.   I could go on and on about my brother but it will just piss me off more.  Can you tell I needed to get this off my chest?  I was polite to him but he is the most self-centered person I have ever known.

We had our Christmas on Christmas Eve and we had people over for christmas day (besides my brother and parents) and it was a little stressful but in the end it was fun.  My Mom made the most wonderful Carmel Apple Cheese Cake and I have the recipe if any one wants it.  It is super easy to make.  I am glad it is all over but I miss my Mom.  I wish my son and mom could have stayed longer, then things would have been perfect.  My husband put my quilting machine together and put on the new parts he had to order (because the moving people totally screwed it up).  It works!  My husband can do anything.  He also fixed the dishwasher that screwed up again (different reason).  I feel so lucky to be married to him, I swear he can do anything.  He also took down the tree all by himself.  I asked him if he wanted help and he said no because I had put it up all by myself.  I on the other hand, once everyone left, have been a total lazy ass.

We were suppose to go to a New Years Eve party last night but we actually forgot about it.  At about 8:30 last night when my husband and I were sitting on the couch I remembered.  We could have still gone but we didn't.  We are getting boring.  Today we went and saw the movie Sherlock Holmes.  I liked it.

Does your brother know about DU? He'd fit in it sounds like. Then he can complain about his tightwad sister who doesn't understand artists.

I mentioned DU in passing and he acted like he had never heard of it.  After he got home from my house he emailed a link to Think Progress. It was about senator Inhofe (Oklahoma) and how he was talking about how he doesn't have any divorce or homosexuality in his family.  My brother said when he was here that he doesn't like republicans because they don't want gays marry. I had to point out that States that are overwhelmingly Dem (for example CA) voted for the gay marriage ban (just a note that I personally don't care if gay people marry. Guess it's the libertarian in me).

He also said that he thinks banks should just give him and people like him houses that they are foreclosing on at a below market price. I asked him who is going to make up the difference between what the bank has outstanding on the loan, what they would be able to get for the house from a "normal" person, be able to recoup the cost of foreclosing on the house etc. and what he would pay for the house?  He of couse said the government. To which I said, at some point you will run out if other peoples money.

I normally put it in a Dutch oven (with the lid). Sprinkle (I use quite a bit) of brisket seasoning. I cook it at 225 all day long. It will fall apart when it's finished.

He sounds like a piece of crap... that's a disgusting thing to say about your brother Mark.  Horrible.  I'd like to trade places with him -- I've got as much as he does in loans, and I make a whole lot less than $34k (and my parents aren't paying my rent).

You aren't almost 50 years old either and still gambling even though it has ruined you. Everything is everyone elses fault. When he first starts talking about all of his problems he will say how he screwed up but in the end it always comes back to someone elses fault.  Usually our grandma (paternal). She is a piece of work, seriously I would bet you a ton of money that you have never met anyone like her. Think of Mrs. Kravitz from Bewitched only more sinister.  I'm sure there is some sort of clinical name for why she is the way she is. It's rather sad as I would give anything to have a normal, cute little old grandma who thought my brothers and I hung the moon. What we got was a nasty gossip who would tell us (but my oldest brother more) what was wrong with us rather than what was right. she also uses money as a way to get you to do what she wants. I never really fell for it but my brother, who must think with a different part of his brain, always did. When it gets really bad she will just tell him he is out of her will. She is 95 and wants so deperately to have something wrong medically but has managed to make it to 95 without ever having anything seriously wrong with her.

I know you must think I am terrible for talking about my grandma that way (and believe me I haven't even said the half of it) but at some point you just get sort of numb to it. The thing that is ironic is that my brother has turned into my gandma (except for the gossip and bribing part), someone he can't stand yet there he is, a mini her.

Maybe the difference is that you said you don't cover it. I always cover mine. I have had it be under cooked but never over cooked. You can tell if it isn't done by stickings a fork in it and twisting. If it doesn't fall apart it isn't done.
