Video PORTLAND, Ore. – A Portland State University professor is fighting back after a national conservative group has labeled a politics class he teaches as the "sixth-most dangerous" taught in America.

The group, Family Security Matters, says the class "Truth, Lies, Politics and Policy" is full of anti-American rhetoric.

Prof. Rick Rolf called the charges laughable and dangerous.

"I think this mean-spirited sort of action is exactly what they're trying to do is to muzzle people and to shut them down," he told KATU.

On its Web site, Family Security Matters points to Rolf's earlier job as a policy adviser to Democratic Sen. Ted Kennedy and claims the professor uses only progressive textbooks to "brainwash students."

"If you don't fit their box precisely, then you're in trouble," he said. "You're not a good American."

Rolf said the group doesn't mention the conservative books on his class list or the fact that he once ran for Congress as a Republican.

Students who have taken Rolf's class say it was ideologically balanced and are outraged by the conservative group's label.

"We're not going to tolerate this kind of intimidation in the public education system," said one student, Joe Casey. "It's unacceptable."

Rolf is fighting back by encouraging students to think critically, a message he spread during an outdoor rally Tuesday on campus. In addition to warning students about the dangers of distortion, he also poked fun at his new label.

"If I'm the sixth-most dangerous professor in America, America is very safe," he told the crowd.

The conservative group behind the online list did not respond to e-mail requests for an interview Tuesday.

he's screaming about his right to free speech, but I will bet you any amount of money that he is an ardent supporter of strict PC speech code enforcement.

he's also obviously not very smart, or he would have never said "laughable and dangerous".  I understand his use of the word "laughable", but putting those two words together tend to cancel each other out on some mental level or other.

The list of the schools I'd even consider for my child is growing really short!!!!
I can see November 2 from my house!!!

Spread my work ethic, not my wealth.

Forget change, bring back common sense.

No, my friends, there’s only one really progressive idea. And that is the idea of legally limiting the power of the government. That one genuinely liberal, genuinely progressive idea — the Why in 1776, the How in 1787 — is what needs to be conserved. We need to conserve that fundamentally liberal idea. That is why we are conservatives. --Bill Whittle
