Snow, winds, wreaking havoc in northeastern Nebraska

The last sentence of the article gives the statistics; for those living in New England or upstate New York, how do they compare with yours?

Of course, out here on the roof of Nebraska (I live north of Norfolk, the nearest big city), it's usually not the inchange of snow, but the per-hours mileage of snow.  Plus the fact that there's fewer people in this part of Nebraska than there are in most neighborhoods of blue cities.

-----

Winds create havoc in trying to remove 18 inches of snow

The blizzard that struck Christmas eve and lasted all of Christmas day finally showed signs of letting up Saturday morning.

As a result, Saturday was expected to be a day of digging out for Norfolk and most of Northeast and North Central Nebraska.

The Nebraska State Patrol was not recommending travel in Northeast Nebraska on Saturday morning.

At one point on Friday night, nearly every major highway and other roads in Northeast Nebraska were closed, including Highway 81 from Yankton to Columbus and Highway 275 from Pilger to Norfolk.

In cities and towns, such as Norfolk, conditions weren't any better.

Norfolk Mayor Sue Fuchtman said it was one of the more memorable blizzards in years, mostly because of the wind. Probably the most fortunate thing was that it occurred on Christmas eve and Christmas when travel was not essential for most people.

"I don't know that we've experienced winds this consistent," Fuchtman said. "It seemed like it was consistently blowing. I can remember winds blowing hard four to six hours or eight hours, but this has been for a couple of days."

Fuchtman said she appreciated the businesses that closed and people who stayed off the streets, giving street crews a chance to do their jobs. After a blizzard like this, it will take some time to get all the streets cleared, she said.

The winds caused severe drifts, even in town. In some residential areas, drifts reached the roofs of some houses or were in excess of five feet on the street.

Al Roder, Norfolk city administrator, said all city snow removal crews were out at 2 a.m. on Saturday and were still working at 9 a.m. to clear the major arterial streets. Usually those streets can be cleared in three or four hours, but it was taking much longer because of the wind.

"Pushing the snow is not an issue," Roder said. "We got a foot of snow on Christmas and about six inches the day before that. That's not a problem. It's the 30 to 40 mph winds that keep blowing it back."

Roder said he anticipates that it will be 9 or 10 p.m. Saturday before Norfolk streets are cleared. Then with forecasts for winds to remain in the 20s over the next few days, it could be several days of work for street crews to keep the streets open, he said.

On Christmas day, crews were out just trying to keep the main routes available for people in case of emergencies. Because of the winds, that often meant that streets blew shut within about an hour after plows went through, he said.

Another thing hurting snow removal efforts on Saturday were stranded or stuck vehicles, Roder said. Snow plows were having to slow down or stop in some places because of abandoned vehicles, he said.

A snow emergency that was declared Thursday night in Norfolk remained in effect on Saturday. That means in areas where parking is normally allowed on both sides of streets, it is restricted to the even-side only. Better yet, crews were asking that all vehicles be removed from streets if possible.

Gary Sudbeck, manager of the Sunset Plaza mall, said efforts were to try and have the mall open at 10 a.m. Saturday, with noon being the latest planned opening. Snow plows had been working since 3 a.m. and had many of the parking lots cleared by 8 a.m. Saturday.

"That's the plan right now (for an opening at 10 a.m.)," Sudbeck said early Saturday morning.  note by franksolich: it didn't open

The day after Christmas typically is busy for merchants, with may businesses trying to help customers with exchanges or to be available to redeem gift cards, he said.

A trooper who drove Saturday morning before sunrise from Madison to Norfolk on Saturday morning said travel was treacherous.

The wind was still blowing, roads were 100 percent snow and ice covered and there were areas where white-out conditions existed, leaving drivers unable to tell where they were going, the trooper said.

The Nebraska Department of Roads sent plows out at 5:45 a.m. Saturday, but it would be hours before they would be able to get roads cleared, the trooper said. Until the winds let up later on Saturday, some roads will have to be replowed, he said.

Snow plows were pulled of the highways about 4 p.m. Friday. The only exception was when the patrol received calls of stranded motorists.

In those cases, a plow would lead the way to try and reach the motorist. About 35 to 40 people were rescued from their cars around Northeast Nebraska, the trooper said. Some people were able to get their vehicles pulled out, while others had to leave them on the highway, the trooper said.

Along with white-out conditions, the snow plow operators will have to avoid some abandoned vehicles on roads, which were expected to be towed into towns later on Saturday, the trooper said.

Efforts were being made to clear Highways 81 and 275 first then other highways such as 91, 32 and 13. Next, other roads will be plowed, the trooper said. Even with four-wheel drives, travel was expected to be difficult on Saturday, he said.

So far during December, Norfolk has received 28.4 inches of snow and more than 32.6 inches this season. That's more than three times the usual 10.4 inches of snow the city usually receives so far this early in the season.

I think we average around 30 inches of snow per year.

I hope the wind lets up before I have to go east tomorrow.  I'm hearing that the white-outs are bad and I'll be on the road about 5 a.m.

I wonder how our experiences here on the eastern slope of the Sandhills compares with your experiences way over on the western slope the Sandhills.

For this time of the year, that would be a lot.  We got only 8" or so last week, and a bunch of that has melted.  We may get a dusting on Monday night.

Waaay back in 1987, about 2 feet fell on October 4th.  I was in Germany at the time and never really saw much about it.

It was a nasty event, that was a Sunday and didn`t have power back on until Wednesday.
Was going to be in a antique tractor plowing demonstration which of course didn`t happen.
It was kind of "funny" until about 10:00 when the electricity went off at the friends place I was at and all you could here was what sounded like rifle shots everywhere as tree limbs broke or trees fell.
Knew then it was a bad situation.

Thanksgiving day in the early 70s had a major 2-3 foot snowfall and Thanksgiving of 1985 another heavy one.

One of the coldest days ever here in my life was Christmas of 1980 when it was at least -40 with a wind, didn`t get out of the barn until 11:00 trying to get the cows milked and pipes thawed and fixed.
One year later on Christmas day when I was a senior in high school it was 60 degrees.

Damn ice age/global warming thing.

I remember that snowfall--my father went out and bought a snowblower, even though we lived in an apartment.  When we moved from Troy to Saratoga Springs that next September, we used that snowblower a lot at the new house.  Damn thing kept running for 25+ years, too.

The winter misery up here can fill volumes, may not have the lake effect snows but plenty of other ugly.
Remember the 2 foot of snow that fell about the 9th of April 1979 or the brutal winter of 1994 where it was below 0 for highs almost all of Jan and half of Feb?
Easy to hate this wretched place.

Son's girlfriend is in Grand Island...she texted a little bit ago they have about 28", still blowing, snowed in and being told to not travel.

She's supposed to be flying out of Omaha really early Wed morning to Nashville ....I sure hope she makes it....she's going through Minneapolis.

That 30 inches is usually spread out over 5 or 6 different snow falls. There's 4-5 inches on the ground, and it's still coming down, albeit lightly. The last big snow that was close to 18" was a couple of years ago.

I haven't looked it up, but it seems to me that thirty inches per winter is the average in Nebraska--"winter" being defined as from the first measurable snowfall to the last measureable snowfall, whenever either event happens.

We had 12" a week or ten days ago, and another 18" through Christmas, and it's still falling, although very lightly.

The "killer" in Nebraska is the wind, which can take a 2" snowfall and create Matterhorns with it.

I suspect New England and upstate New York get more snow than we do, but I'm wondering how much more.

Son talked to girlfriend a little while ago....she finally made it from Grand Island to her apartment in Kearney. Said drifts were unreal...and it's still blowing some, but at least not snowing.

She is going back to GI tonight and then on to Omaha tomorrow with aunt and uncle to stay with them until she flies out on Wednesday morning....

Okay, as of circa 4:00 p.m. central time, 3:00 p.m. mountain time, I've been liberated; I can now come and go as I please.  The snow's been cleared.

It was a really uncomfortable time, the past three days, myself unable to get out.

The county sheriff of course stopped here two times, to be sure all was copacetic, given that until this afternoon, I was the only sole solitary human being in the whole western half of the county.  He used some sort of thing with runners--not quite the same thing as a snowmobile, though--coming along the river, and then up here.

But if something had happened before he came, well, I would've been excresence out of luck.  Until this afternoon.

Since I'm so cut off, normally I would think about attaching a note around the neck of one of the cats, and shoo it towards the highway, but an elephant, much less a cat, couldn't possibly get through this to the highway.

I got a cellular telephone with 6000 prepaid minutes for Christmas--odd gift for a person who's deaf--but I had gotten that my very last trip to town before White Hell descended, just minutes before, and never had a chance to activate or program or whatever it.

The electricity flickered occasionally, and the internet was intermittent at times, but one is grateful to God that neither ever went out entirely.  Just a few weak moments here and there, but never out.

I'm free.....free as a bird!

The wind quite at this end of the state at 9:30 last night.  House immediately started to warm up.  The drive to Scottsbluff early this morning was open all the way and no blowing snow.

We didn't get near the snow in the western edge.  Roads here were closed just because of the lack of visibility.  Maybe had 4 or 5 inches total.

Frank, can you use a cell to text message the Relay service?  Just wondering.

I dunno.

The thing on the top of the blister-package says it has text messaging.

But it seems absent an owner's manual.

I'll worry about it tomorrow (Monday), when I go to the big city, and have someone there set it up for me.

Living the way I do, it's not that I don't have skills and dexterity--in fact I probably have more than what the primitives in blue cities have--but it's just more of a matter of something that takes me two hours to do, takes someone else five minutes, and I believe in savng time.

Snow?  What's that? :-)

Sunny and 50°.  Pretty nice for Boxing Day weather.

Grandma called the day after Xmas as boxing day also.

We on the coast get the snow but the salt air eats it right up.  Towns 20 miles away usually get a couple feet more snow then we do.

We can get 6 inches of snow but with a Nor Easter a blowing, we also get white out conditions.

This was a FANTASTIC blizzard!!   :-) :-)  We traveled to Pine Bluffs, Wyoming, and watched a total white-out for nearly 2 whole days!  (Of course, driving back to Sidney, NE through that was less fun.)  :bawl:

When we finally made it back to SouthEast Kansas, we found 3' drifts...my 12 year old was furious.  "Why did we go all that way to have a white Christmas when it snowed here????"  (As though we could have foreseen this...  ::)  :-))

Glad to hear you and the cats survived the storm, frank!  I think Eastern Nebraska caught a lot more than the Western part we drove through.  After seeing the conditions where they had a couple inches of snow, it must have been way impressive where you are!

Wow, Mrs. Smith.

You were up in longview's neck of the prairie.

You probably didn't know that, though.

You will be able to text very easily....and that's a good thing.

I am so glad I reread as I was about to suggest texting to Frank.  The phone on vibrate will get his attention also.

Discussing ideas for Frank to pass the winter one of the little ones, 10 years old suggests Frank place the phone on a surface that will carry vibrations.  Everytime a call comes in give the cats a treat.
I get my cats attention with strained meat baby food, just a tea spoon.

As time goes on the cat will come a running if you get a call and the phones in the other room.

Pavlov's dogs they will be, and why not give it a try, won't cost but a few hours a day off and on, you know quality Time.

There is, or was a very small church near Camberage that has/had a deaf female minister.  She had a small Shelty like dog that was trained for service to the deaf.  A book was written about her life with the obstacles she and the dog faced.

Kind of amazing as she herself with advice from the Vet trained the dog.  Service dogs of any kind cost the earth,  do it your self with a little research, gives a whole new dimension to life. She made it all seem so easy.

People seldom try to train cats, they take for granted that cats are either too stubborn or stupid to be taught.   This is not true, they just need to accept that reacting to the situation by them doing a trained skill, will get their tummy fed.

Biggest problem for my 2 guys at this time of year I put wild bird seed and unsalted peanuts out for the squirrels on top of a table against the sliding glass doors.  The regular eaters now pay no attention to my hair balls smashing head on into the glass, don't seem to hear the yells of frustration.

The male has finally got the knack of fetch---he has his preferences, he only returns a balled up small piece of paper.   The female is learning to sit up like a bear and pay no attention to my Hubby.

Put those cat to work for you Frank, with all of us here that have lived with cats most of our lives, someone should be able to  help you get the cats in line and work for their daily bread.

BTW, thinking about you being so far away from neighbors----I well know that feeling,---  Can you get a neighbor to help you install a cheap antenna near a window.?     In case of any emergency inside the house you could just open the window and if able, hoist a flag of some sort telling all who passes that you need help .?           This from an 8 year old.

My friends kids are really into this How or what can we dream up to help a stranger.   not a one of them mentioned sending you money.

This month is that rare time of a blue moon on New Years.   This is a good time in history to be alive, thank the Fates, the Gods or what ever for this time we are leaving what will soon be known as the Good Old Years.
