God I hate this country.
   
As those few of you who have ever read my posts know, I live in downtown San Jose, California. The demographics vary from the homeless that tend to live by the river to the affluent that live in the high rise condos with views of the valley but for the most part, it's pretty working class neighborhood.
A few moments ago, someone knocked on our door asking for food and water. Anything! as he was hungry and thirsty. Can you imagine what level you would have to reach to knock on strangers doors for food and water?
I've been out of work for six months and we are, at this point, hardly flush but I'm still in the kitchen preparing for our winter solstice dinner. Roast Goose with all the fixings and we can still afford two buck Chuck.
The only thing we had to offer him was a fresh baguette that I had baked this morning, a jar of peanut butter and a couple of bottles of water.
I never even saw the guy as my wife answered the door but after rounding up what we had to offer that would be immediately edible, I just had to go into my bathroom and cry.
I don't cry. I'm a 59 year old, 5'11", 235# construction worker. The last time I can remember crying was about 10 years ago when someone came to my door because he saw the box from my new dishwasher in my truck and he wanted it for shelter.
We are just barbarians.

a scene showing an American corporation bulldozing a sacred piece of land while military surrounded the bulldozers to ward off the indigenous people made my friend blurt out "God, I hate Americans!" in the middle of the theater after having been silent throughout the rest of the film "We've pulled the same crap on so many people, starting with OUR Natives." she growled. I knew that it wasn't the stuff in the fictional story that was getting to her, but the stuff that we're ALL seeing these days. How the corporate elite trample on lives and take whatever they damn well please, as much as they want, and no one stops them. This past weekend a guest on Moyers said that it will take nothing short of revolution to reverse the trend. And probably the kind that involves more than just letter writing and marches on Washington.

China is taking sustainable energy more seriously than we are. We used to say 'why should we take the lead since China won't follow'. Now China is leading.
The human rights laws of various third world countries that were dictatorships a few decades ago are stronger than ours. Now Bush & company can't go to those countries for fear of being arrested on human rights violations.
Our country has descended into plutocracy and religious authoritarianism.
It is disappointing. Sucks. Sorry.

83. I hear ya, I felt like crying last night
and I never cry. There are so many ruthless aholes now that aren't being held accountable that we've truly become a country run by criminals. No health care just more corrupt health "insurance", war-mongering unabated, outsourcing continues, torturers go free, propaganda on top of propaganda, 1 layer of criminals followed by another.

It's truly sad and "we the people" are currently screwed.

The fact that you are a 59 year old construction worker who cries and celebrates the Winter Solstice should be enough to tell you your life has definetly taken a strange path! Oh! and the above should be enough to get your ass kicked on any construction site cupcake!  :-) :whatever:

There are enough safety nets in this country so that people don't have to go door to door begging for bread and water.  What are foodstamps for?  Every municipality in this country has something, so I'm not buying this stupid weepy goofy story.  It's straight out of a movie set in the Great Depression era.  Plaigairist. 

Hate America?  Get the hell out.  And another thing.  Don't these morons' poor fingers ever get tired of typing the word "corporate?"

You had an opportunity to actually practice what you preach and you failed miserably.

I live in the same area as this guy.  Suburbs, not downtown, but there are definitely soup kitchens, food pantries, etc. that  the homeless guy could have gone to for food.  In fact, a quick search brings up a website with 26 food pantries listed, most in the downtown area, and I know that there are even more churches with food pantries that are not listed.  OffWithTheirHeads, I would suggest visiting a couple of the local ones and asking for business cards that you can give to the next homeless person who comes to you asking for food, so that they have a more sustainable source of food.

I don't want to dismiss the fact that there is a large segment of poor folk in this country. I suspect that there are homeless people who are in that condition by choice. They would rather drink cheap hooch that conform and be productive. That being said, the poor in this country have it better than 50% (SWAG) of the worlds population.

They need to STF up.

I went over and read as much of the thread as I could physically stand.  If your stomach is sensitive today, I don't recommend going.  It's a big Kum-by-ya hug, with lots and lots of backslapping to the fake effeminite construction worker crybaby.  "Bless you ten-fold for your gift to this hungry man"  and so forth.  Not one of them asked why he was eating an entire roast goose with trimmings and wine, and the bum got bread & water and sent on his way. 

Lots of America-hating, with one limey saying she's moving back to UK and its decent caring society.  She just hates seeing those charity jars in the stores.  I hope she enjoys the totalitarian nanny-state, the muslims over-running the place, the 20% unemployment, and resulting rampant alcoholism.  Bye!

If this guy's (a) a construction worker and (b) so terribly affected by the sight of the destitute (the last time he "cried" was when some hobo asked to have the box from his new dishwasher for a shelter 10 years ago - so he knows about some people not having housing), then why the hell isn't he volunteering with, say, Habitat for Humanity, to build homes for the homeless?  Particularly now when he's been out of work for 6 months (as he claims)?  I mean seriously, what better way to (i) make good, productive, charitable use of your free time - and keep your skills sharp - other than by building homes for the homeless, and (ii) network with other people involved in the building industry so that you're in touch first with those people who are likely to have, or know about, paying jobs you might be able to get?

This guy's just a lying SOS who's making this story up to garner false sympathy and get all the other idiot libs all worked up about how "evil" America is - well, honey, if America is "evil" it's because of people like you.

Um, I'm 6' and weigh in at 245. Muscle weighs more than jello!

I assure you, I work for a living! I worked construction close to 30 years. Putting on muscle is a hazard of the job.

They have to turn up the heat on the x-ray machine when taking pics of my back because of the increased density.

ETA: This guy is no construction worker. Construction workers only cry when their grandchildren ask them why Bambi's daddy had to die.

My point being, most of the guys in construction don't have that much bodyfat, and to weigh that at his height, he'd be more in line with an NFL running back.  Dad, before he got sick, was 5' 7", 138 lbs, and could climb steel with the best of them.

So, if you're not an NFL running back with 6 percent BF, the other option (more likely for a DUmmie) is that he's got about a 42-inch waist and man tits bigger than his momma.

Frankly, he put in the "Internet Tough Guy" bit on just a little too thick.
