I went to the tire shop today   Updated at 3:09 PM

to get a couple of new rear tires for my evil SUV. Got a good price, and the place was really busy. So, while I was waiting and having a cuppa joe in the customer waiting area, I struck up a conversation with a guy who has a small business installing hardwood floors as a subcontractor. His van was in getting four new tires.

"How's business?" I asked him, in the way strangers converse in tire shop waiting rooms.

"A heck of a lot better than last year at this time," was his answer. So, I asked why he thought that was.

His answer was that the economic crisis in the fall of 2008 made everyone fearful and unwilling to do things like remodeling their homes or finishing their basements. So I asked him what he thought made the difference. His answer was interesting.

To paraphrase, he said that he'd always voted for Republicans for President. When Obama got elected he was sure that would finish off the country. He almost went under in 2008. But, he continued, that didn't happen. Instead, there was a slow, steady increase in his business, starting in about June of 2009. Now, in December, he said it's a complete turnaround for his business, and he's way busier than he needs to be. People are doing add-ons to their homes, replacing old floors, and finishing their basements.

I asked him if he thought Obama had anything to do with that. He said that he thought the stuff Obama did early in 2009 made people feel a little more confident about where things were going.

So, I asked him about the health care bill, figuring he'd have a real problem with that. Not so. He said that the way it looked to him, he'd probably be able to finally get some insurance for his kids, one of whom has epilepsy. Right now, he said, nobody would touch that kid.

About then, my SUV was ready, so that was the end of the waiting room conversation. I found it interesting.

Only a one bouncer.

8. I was encouraged by the conversation. I'm not sure this   Updated at 3:09 PM

guy is ready to vote for Democrats, but he can see things improving for him, personally, so that's a positive. It was also interesting to see what his views were on HCR. It's going to affect him positively, so he's not against it.

Small steps.

A bouncy in a bouncy.

4. Yesterday a couple of guys in my gym's locker room were talking about Obama and Senator Sanders.

This is a stones throw from Emory University and based on part of their conversation, they were somewhere in the medical industry. Doctors or suits, I'm not sure. They seemed to be ending a conversation about the health bill.

One of them said that Bernie was just a former librarian and knew nothing about running a business. The other responded that Obama was basically the same way.

They went on to talk about how we need more business people in government.

I laughed and said sarcastically, 'Yeah, like George W. Bush. That worked out well.'

That ended the conversation and I went to shower.

Come to think of it, unions do create jobs. Companies have to hire two workers to do the work of one.

So you want librarians and community activists to run the government? :whatever:

Idiots.

It's interesting how one DUmmy spinning a bouncy tale so often inspires other DUmmies to make up tales of their own.
It must be similar to how a person throwing up can cause nausea in others who are nearby.

I can attest to this.  Long story, had to do with an ROTC PT test while 40% of the campus had the flu, many years ago.

It's a stupid story, but Tucker13, I loooooove your icon.  LOL!  My tire shop tale is thus:  I was getting my annual inspection done, and a guy was reading the paper in the waiting room.  He muttered under his breath, "Obama is the scourge of the earth."   I gave him a wry smile and a single nod.  End of story.  No bushes, no cops, no conversions.  Sorry.

Only credit given is for sticking to the script about being in a repair shop waiting room.
There was a conversion but not by the words of the DUmmy so can`t really count that and missed on the cheering crowd.

Otherwise an obvious fairy tale if there ever was one.

Maybe so, but the absence of cheering onlookers is a serious flaw. Onlookers are always supposed to cheer.

That is critical to the story and to leave that part out is just inexcusable.

That's funny because of the four contractors I know all of their business is down. They all had jobs at this time last year but are only getting very small remodels now.  Each one had the same thing to say "People are worried about their taxes going up and are not spending." This in a very, very liberal and affluent city in kalifornia.  The only thing keeping them going is the rebuilding of fire damaged houses which the local government is slowing down as much as possible with lots of reports and reviews before allowing rebuilding.
When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

Tire shop owner here that I've done business with since I was a teenager is about to go under.....several people I know in the home construction/work line are out of work or working a week, off a week. I guess they're being punished for living and voting in a red state.
“The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of ‘liberalism’, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.” - Norman Thomas, U.S. Socialist Party presidential candidate 1940, 1944 and 1948

The builders I know are looking for the low end stuff to keep busy.  They have higher overhead than the Handy-Dans who normally do it but they pretty much shut them out when times get lean.  It is going to be a lean winter.

As always DUmmies lie all the time. I have several family members who are building contractors. They are to the point that they are taking any sort of job that they can get, and they're still not working much.

Grocery stores are okay as the location of a bouncy, but only if it's Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, or a local independent with a great selection of organics.

It actually doesn't matter which type of grocery store, bouncies "happen" in any of them.  There have been dozens, if not hundreds over the years.

Many have even happened in Walmart of all places.
