Audio cassettes make comeback

After years of dwindling sales in the face of competition from CDs and digital downloads, the death knell for the format was sounded two years ago when retailers stopped stocking cassettes.
However, record companies are now releasing music on tape again due to growing demand from more senior music fans.
 
Island Records was surprised when it sold out a run of 4,000 copies of the album Words For You on cassette within weeks of going on sale last month.
The company has now ordered thousands more copies of the album, featuring stars including Joanna Lumley reciting poetry to classical music, to cash in on the growing power of the grey pound.
Ian Brown, from Island Records, said the label spotted the niche in the market after fans began emailing Amazon, the online retailer, requesting the album on cassette.
He said: "Many of our customers are over 85 and a lot won't even have upgraded to CDs, let alone mp3s, so we thought we would give it a go and made 4,000. They sold out in weeks of going on sale last month.
"What is exciting is that we don't know how big the market is because no one realised there was this demand. ...

I have an older friend that still has a reel to reel tape recorder/ player. Turntables have been making a comeback, too.

can well understand turntables since vinyl is such a satisfying format especially LPs, cassettes not so much. I have traditionally been a late adopter so I'm gratified that others are even further behind me.  :-)

I'd love for them to bring back 45's and those big ass album covers and albums....I'm feeling nostalgic lately...This was one of my first albums...

What's next, VCR's making a comeback?  The two that I own do nothing but eat tapes, so they're gathering dust and should be thrown out.

I did enjoy cassette tapes.  CD's had just become big during the end of my high school/beginning of college years.  Most of us didn't have car CD players, so tapes were always popular to pass around.

My "TV stand" is my father's old cabinet phono/radio. Took the components out a few weeks ago and found two old LP's on the turntable. Made me smile a bit.

I have the first Van Halen Album on LP. I have about 100 LPs that are present and accounted for. One is from a USMC Band Concert in 1968 in Dallas. I found the accompanying programs inside the jacket. I can't wait to record that to my computer in mp3 format. I had the Navy Album, but it's somewhere in MN right now :(  If you want old, I DO have an original Chubby Checker LP.
