It was pretty dang cold for here this time last week, more moderate this week, but I tell ya, I kind of dig it.  It is nice to be a bit chilly ramping up before the holidays, and as long as I have no ice storms to contend with, I am a happy camper.

I may have to look into one of those starter things.  I can say I would probably use it more for cooling down the car in the 9 month summer we have.

One notices the primitives always make excuses about things they want other people to do, but can't themselves, because of certain circumstances.

In this case, the quaking primitive might say, "Well, I live in a rural area where there's no public transportation" or "But I live in the northern regions where more than half the year it's too cold to ride a bicycle."

But the primitives fail to remember, when telling other people what to do, that other people might have the same excuses as the "but I can't, because in my case....." primitives do.

If you are old enough to drive....and live in areas of the country where sleet/ice/snow is a concern....shouldn't you already know the best way to clear the windows of said precipitation?

I mean....it's not exactly rocket science....unless one moved from somewhere too warm to have to know/worry about it...since last winter.
Just hand over the chocolate...back away slowly...far away....and you won't get hurt....

I remember seeing lots of cars with cardboard in front of the radiator in the late 60's through the 70's.  I think it's less needed with smaller engines that we have now.
You probably don't want to do that with a gasoline engine. The places I go in Quebec, businesses and parking lots have electric outlets at each parking spot where people plug in crankcase heaters. Most cars you see have a short electrical cord hanging out of their grill. Cold antifreeze isn't a problem, but motor oil gets very thick and makes it hard to crank (or lubricate) a cold engine, though I've never had a problem with rental cars.

My first winter in QC, I got one of those heaters installed. It started shorting out last year, so is now inoperative. But to give you an idea how cold it gets, the first real cold snap, I slid on some ice, and rear ended a mini van. Took out my radiator, causing all my coolant to drain onto the road. There was a radiator shop just a few doors down from my girlfriend's house, which was about six miles from where I had the accident. I took the chance, and drove the six miles with no coolant in my Durango (318ci). The engine was just starting to warm up as I pulled into the radiator shop.

So I had warmed up the car for fifteen minutes before I left the house, drove six miles, got in an accident, spent about fifteen minutes talking to the lady I hit, and then drove six more miles, all on whatever coolant was trapped in the engine block by the thermostat.

There's a special kind of cold that seems to swirl in that vortex that meanders between Montreal and Quebec City.

Isn't Montreal/Quebec nearly north of the Dakotas?  That seems to be the coldest part of the US.  Things just get worse from there the further north you go.  I was looking at a temperature map earlier today... you folks in Minnesota got nothing on those poor bastards in Fargo.

I've lived south of the Mason Dixon line 90% of my life.  I ain't budging for nobody.

Quebec is north of NY state/Vermont/NH/Maine. There is something going on there that is more than just being "north". If you look at a weather satellite map, the weather over the entire eastern half of North America seems to rotate around a point that moves back and forth between roughly Quebec City and Montreal. I call it "the vortex".

The winter weather in Montreal is harsher than just about anywhere in the lower 48 states. But the weather in Quebec City is even harsher still, even though it is only about an hour drive away to the north east. My house in Vermont is about an hour south of Montreal, and it is noticeably less windy and cold here in Vermont. I used to drive between Montreal and Vermont every week, and the fronts tend to hang right over the international border. (I suspect that's why the border is where it is.) When you are driving south toward the US, you can watch the temperature rise rapidly as you approach the border.

Iassa, how's that global warming working out for you?  It's been hellacious here the last week or so.

If you have something like a VW Passat like I do, those remote starters cost around $500.  I've been holding back, but one sure would be nice.

Not too cheap for Jeep Cherokees, either....

I installed one years ago on my wife's 1995 Chevy S-10 Blazer for around 40 bucks....

To put one on our 2002 Jeep will run over $120 just for the hardware....

But it was nice (with the Blazer) to stand at the kitchen window, no matter how hot or cold it was outside, and start it....    :-)

Those flat plastic kids sleds work great on windshields....But don't forget to stick the rope in the door...coz if it's windy, it turns into a kite...I had one, it's prolly still blowin around Fargo somewhere....

Actually, that's kind of an easy, yet chilling, trick. Before parking the car, roll down all windows for a few minutes to let the heat escape. Works well.

Those remote starters would be popular with mafioso. There's a spot in "The Gang That Couldn't Shoot Straight" where the mafia captain, every morning when it came time to leave for work, would kiss his wife goodbye, and then lie down on the kitchen floor while she went out to start the car.

What kind of stupid is it that doesn`t know you have to let the engine coolant get up to temp and defrost the windows before you drive if you live in a cold climate?
If you don`t your own breath will frost up the inside and you can`t see a damn thing nor will the wipers work obviously.

Good God they are the stupidest lot that ever lived.

One good homemade remedy for ice on car window is to mix vinegar and water in a bottle. I think you need a 3 parts vinegar to one part water solution. Spray it on the night before and the ice wil be less likely to freeze on your window. Or you can buy that spray on stuff from the store that was poined out earlier.
