Primitives discuss a DOD name change
« on: December 12, 2009, 07:08:08 PM »
Ben Burch's brother Ken Burch has lit a potential bonfire. Only three responses s far, but I'm sure someone will pour the gas on any minute.

Suggestion: Change the name of the "Department of Defense" back to the "Department of War"

The Pentagon should have a name that's honest, right?

The whole purpose of the place is prepping for and encouraging the onset of the next war, so why not return it to a name that admits that?

Any objections?

Objections? I'm sure there will be calls for Ben's brother to be the new Secretary of War... I mean Peace. SOP, how appropriate...

The HoopHoping primitive gives an alternative

1. Department of Feeding Billions to Contractor Criminals

DoFBtCC would be quite a mouthful though.

3. Yes, there was a refreshing honesty about the name Department of War

"Defense" sounds so noble and altruistic. Who could be against "defense"?

War, on the other hand, is a harder sell

The name change is fine by me.  I'm not a freaked-out appalled idiot mouth-foamer at the thought of the United States of America defending herself by going to war.  I'm also not a phony-ass drooling socialist wannabe who thinks the path to peace is through eliminating war.  I happen to know FOR SURE that without the ability to go to war there would not be a free man or woman living anywhere in this world.

Can we also change the name of the department that administers food stamps and other welfare to the "Department of Leeches, Moochers and Losers"?

Well played.

What about:

Department of Education
Department of the Interior
Department of Transportation

etc?

Same here.  After all, while playing defense is nice, Americans play offense, too - we get out there and proactively kick butts that need kicking (when we don't have a Democrat in the Whitehouse, at least) - so Department of War sounds just fine by me.

Sounds great.  With a Department of Defense, we got rules of engagement.  With the Department of War,  we get "who ever breaks the most stuff wins".
You see, I don't care you how feel.  I really don't.  More importantly, neither does anyone else.  Only about 200 people on a planet of 7 billion actually care about your feelings, and that's if you're lucky.  The sooner you grasp this lesson, the better off you will be.  And since almost no one gives a damn what you do, say, think, or feel, appealing to your feelings when you encounter differences of opinion is not only illogical, but useless.

Well, the Navy would totally shit a brick, since prior to the formation of DOD after WWII, the "War Department" meant stricly land warfare, and latterly land-based air combat forces ONLY, and the squids had the separate "Navy Department."
It would put all the Army's idiotic pissing and moaning about the stupid black beret totally in the shade by comparison...it would go down about as well as deciding the Marine dress uniform should be purple to show they have land, sea, and air missions.

Considering the number of your own party that have and continue to vote for funding of the WoT...and given the fact that YOUR President is continuing to send soldiers into harms way.  It's not really that much of a hard sell.

And when you think about it...their hairebrained idea to go back to a pre 1949 name for the DoD is silly for them to propose since they are so opposed to calling what we're doing in Iraq and Afghanistan as a "war".
