Tuesday December 8 thread
« on: December 08, 2009, 08:48:37 AM »
No one's started one, so I guess I will.

The snow's pounding down heavily in the Sandhills of Nebraska this morning, with visibility near or at zero.  If one drives, he has to drive by Braille.

It's 15 degrees right now, winds varying 15-25 mph.

We're expected to get about 8 inches by 6:00 p.m. (central time; 5:00 p.m. mountain time).

After which it gets bad.

Tonight's low is expected to be circa -5 degrees--and it's still expected to be snowing--but worse than that, after 6:00 p.m. (central time; 5:00 p.m. mountain time), the wind will pick up, and for the rest of today, and all 24 hours of tomorrow (Wednesday), there's predicted to be gusts circa 45-55 mph.

As bad as we're getting it up here, southern Nebraska, including where debk's son used to live, is getting worse than we are up here on the roof of Nebraska; twice the snow, twice the wind, twice the negative temperatures.

There's plenty of cat food and cat litter in the house.  Life is good.

Local weather says we might get between 3-5" tonight.

I'm actually looking forward to the first snowfall, not because I'm a glutton for punishment, but simply because our puppy-of-indeterminate-age, Lexie, has probably never seen snow before. It'll be interesting to see her reaction to it.

6 inches-plus predicted for tonight and tomorrow, turning to ice/rain by tomorrow afternoon.  Lots of wind.

Hell of a way to spend the day off.  Working 9PM-7AM tonight.  At least it's my OT day, so I get 3 hours OT and 7 hours DT (don't ask--it's convoluted how our timesheets work).

And its coming our way here in Missouri......freezing rain right now, changing to snow with up to a foot possible, followed by high winds, and a low tomorrow night of only five degrees......winter in the midwest......

After so many straight time hours in a week, you get paid overtime, then after so much overtime, you get paid double time?

OT after 8 hours.  We have X1 and X2 days (normally Saturday/Sunday.)  All X1 time is OT, all X2 time is DT.  Right now Tuesday and Wednesday are my X1/X2 days.  So the 3 hours between 9 PM and midnight tonight are OT, and anything after that until I get off work is DT.  When I come back on Thursday night it'll be straight time for the first 8, then OT.

Not as good a deal as when I was "in the tools" with SCE.  Back then it was OT after 8, DT after 12 on regular days, and on your X1 day it was OT for first 8, then DT after that.  Made for some nice paychecks when I was working 7-12's towards the end of the year trying to make automation goals.

Were you watching me drive to work this morning Frank?   I didn't know CDOT had traffic cams on US 85 out of Greeley.   :-)

As for what mischief I'm up to today, just the usual design work combined with the added task of trying to keep my tender pink tushie warm in this glorified conex box I get to work in.

Snow, snow, snow.

Mountains of snow.

Valleys of snow.

Plains of snow.

Expanses of snow.

Lakes of snow.

Rivers of snow.

Oceans of snow.

Skies of snow.

Endlessly to the horizon, snow.

Hiding the William Rivers Pitt, snow.

Cluttering the air, snow.

Relentless unceasing snow, the whole world white.

Al Gore begins his latest snake-oil climate change book with a self-written poem:

One thin September soon
A floating continent disappears
In midnight sun

Vapors rise as
Fever settles on an acid sea

Snow glides from the mountain
Ice fathers floods for a season
A hard rain comes quickly
Unknown creatures
Take their leave, unmourned
Horsemen ready their stirrups

Passion seeks heroes and friends
The bell of the city
On the hill is rung

Then dirt is parched
Kindling is placed in the forest
For the lightning’s celebration

The shepherd cries
The hour of choosing has arrived
Here are your tools
