Creating a cement form to secure a planter/tree

I got two urns for christmas that have trees that light up. I want them to be on either side of my front door. Problem is that they are not heavy enough to withstand the high winds in our area. So I am thinking of embedding them in a concrete base. I have the concrete but I need a form. can I use a cardboard box as a form?

Like a gift box?

1. There isa product called liquid nails.

you need a caulk gun and one tub of exterior grade heavy duty liquid nails.

Than glue those things to yer porch.

Otherwise you need at least one inch by four inch by what ever the total length you will need to create the concrete base around those things. You may be able to have the board cut to your dimensions and you can glue the forms together with liquid nails.

But the liquid nails will do it for you without the additional concrete base.

2. i would do that if they weren't just for christmas

however given your idea, I am going to use some concrete stepping stones i have and glue them to those that way after the season we just take them down to the basement attached to the concrete stepping stone!

3. i think your idea would work, really.

if it was a good heavy duty box, and you mix the concrete nice and thick so it has a nice low slump. maybe you could brace up the box with some bricks, or blocks, or just wedge it into a corner. or wrap a couple loops of duct tape around it. you are not talking a half ton of concrete.

do oil it, tho. wd40 would be fine. helps slow water absorption, and makes sure the box will peel off.

Heh... I'd love to see the DUmmy's handiwork.

Yes, it's possible to form small concrete forms with a cardboard frame.  You just have to use a lot of it.  Duct tape helps, too.

Concrete forms for DUmmies:

Take a large cardboard box down to the lake, place on edge of boat dock.
Mix concrete in box, place feet in box, this will help the concrete set faster.
When fully set, hop the box off the edge of the dock. The sudden inrush of water into the form will cause your feet to be immediately released from the concrete.

Are you crazy?  Lumber would cut into the weed-and-Cheetos budget.  Cardboard is free and you can always steal duct tape.

I don't use weed, but I love Cheetos, and I'd still make a wooden form. This DUmmy is going to end up with a couple of ugly wads of concrete.

Damn, I mean, just DAMN!   :hammer:

This idiot must be the same one that works at some agency I just heard of Saturday....

I work as a relief carrier for the USPS.  Saturday, I returned about 80% of a batch of letters mailed from an agency because of old outdated (pre 911) addresses, some that haven't been used in over 20 years in this area.

The name of the agency:

The "Intellectual Disability Agency"....   :rotf:

Oh I am so stealing that idea.  My family is crazy with practical joke gift ideas.  One year my Grandmother unwrapped all of our presents under the tree, the night before Christmas, took out all the gifts and repackaged them with coal, rocks, newspaper and bubble wrap.  (We were being a little too unruly that year.)

YOU HAVE SAVED MY LIFE Thundley.

Every few years Hubby and I get a wild hair and make something outrageous for my eldest son and wife.     This son makes much more money then we do and can afford to buy any darn thing he wants.  We have taken wood from old apple trees that died of old age  on the family home stead and made clocks, one year we made a paper mache light house that was most likely thrown out the next day.  Lots of crazy stuff I don't really remember.

This year I was stumped to the max as to if I should make lamps out of driftwood or good old money.   Darn Thunderely, you are brilliant, what a way to get back at the kids for all those diaper changes.

I wonder if I should line the cardboard box with a plastic bag and just pour in Quick Set concrete, let it set open to the air.?

There are a world of possibility's here, those gold one dollar coins say $50.00 layered in the brick,
A nice broach in a box wrapped in plastic smack dab in the middle of the brick.

If you have any more brain storm ideas on a really fun project, please let me know.

Bless you Thunderly, my heart felt thank YOU.

This one really has a lot of amusement potential.  Will the thin gift-box cardboard throw in the towel right at the start, covering the porch in setting concrete?  Almost certainly, without a liberal use of duct tape or packing tape.  Even if taped, will the untaped parts of the cheap cardboard soak through and lose structural integrity before the concrete sets?  I give that a 50-50, and we all know from the 9-11 posts what hilarily can ensue when a DUmmie gets involved with structural integrity issues.  Just how round and bulged will the incredibly ugly-assed result be?  Very, I'm sure!  How nasty are these things going to look with shreds of cardboard adhering to the dried concrete when it does set?  Mondo nasty!  When will the DUmmie post about the trash guys refusing to take away the 40-pound concrete turds that result from this foray into home improvement?  I give that one about two months!

I hope the DUmmie knows to douse the entire block of concrete and cardboard in kerosene. Then, light it on fire so that the concrete will dry quickly, and, um, the cardboard will burn away, and stuff...

One other time I used the spray insulating foam that comes in a can to fill a much bigger box, with money inside. I try and make them work for the money since that is what they ask for.

I've used cardboard forms but had them varnished or spray coated with plastic.  Of course there needs to be structural strength so the forms do not deform. Round thick cardboard column forms up to 18 inches in diameter are made and used everywhere.

You could give it in dollar coins and just mix them in the concrete.  :-)
