....from family to live in a nicer state?

As you all know, I live in South Florida and I pretty much hate it.  I actually LOVED it when I first moved here 8 years ago from NY.  I was in love with the ocean and lived on the beach, literally.

As time has passed, the novelty of the ocean has somewhat dissipated as I don't have much time to actually go...especially now with a young baby.  The summers are horrible with no relief from the heat 24/7.  Our "winters" are better, but we still get mid 80's in December and January. :whatever:

My parents and brother and his wife live within 15 minutes from me and my parents are my babysitters.  We get together on the weekend often and my baby loves it.  I also have a good paying job that allows me to afford nice things.


Here is my dilemma....I have a huge, beautiful house in NE Georgia, close to the mountains in Dawsonville, GA.  It's a new home that I purchased 3 years ago and kept it as a second home.  I took frequent trips up there and explored the trail of the Appalachian mountains, and wineyards, and waterfalls and all the beauty of nature Georgia has to offer.  I LOVED IT.  My house is a 4/2 with real hardwood floors everywhere, a huge master bedroom, a beautiful backyard (with room for a pool) and a great brick fireplace, a southern style porch, big beautiful windows ( I will post pics later).


So...I bought the house with the intention of moving there...but with the job situation, and a new daughter...it's not so easy to just pick up and leave...especially since my family is in Florda now.  I would like to make a plan to move there 5 years from now..but I would know NO ONE.  It's a scary thought...

I would do what is best for MY family. I would go for moving to Georgia but check out the employment in that area first. It is only a state away, not that far away. My family lives in VA and I am in CA so that is hard, especially at this time of the year. :( Pray about it and let God lead you where you are supposed to do. Good luck!

The reason I have such a good relationship with my family is that I moved bet. 1,200 and 1,600 miles away from them.  If they want to annoy me - or vice versa - they really have to mean it now.

Yes.  Especially since I spent a few years in South Florida, as a child, and my parents as well as my cousin's parents moved away due to a lack luster school system.  Not to mention, Hurricanes, crappy weather, etc.

Hawkgirl - Boy does your story sound like mine.  I moved from Michigan to the West Palm area in 1985 and thought 'I'd died and gone to heaven', golf, fishing year round, life doesn't get any better.  By about 1995, reality set in, and each passing year I liked it less and less there.  Yep, I had my own business, making good money, and at age 55 was 'semi-retired' [only worked 3 half days a week], put still was tired of traffic, increasing taxes and insurance, the influx of people from the islands etc.. Anyway I knew it was time to leave, I didn't have much family there any longer plus alot of close friends had moved.  Daughter was here in Alabama, so we started looking, but nothing happened to speed a move until 2002 when I had a serious operation.  Figured if anything happened to me, at least wife would be near our daughter, so in 2003 we moved.
Best thing that could happen.  
Bottom line - NE Georgia is close, probably only 1 day drive and even though your family is there, if you aren't happy -- move.  Life is to short to be miserable. [Wouldn't surprise me if some in your family would like to leave also].

I moved to Texas with my 2 youngest kids, left the 2 older ones behind.  Now they're all here, and they brought 8 more with 'em! I keep threatening to buy an RV so they can't find me; they threaten to microchip me.  :-)

For me, moving out of SE Michigan, away from family, was a REQUIREMENT.

I have no problems with my family, but I had major problems with that sucking chest wound known as the greater metro Detroit area.

They fully understood and supported my decision. In fact, I did all that twice - once upon enlistment in the Army and second, following retirement and my return to MI (to get my feet on the ground). Both times I RAN, not walked, to escape the horrors of SE Michigan.

The big deal should be the job angle, seems to me. It's kinda hard to afford a mortgage unless you're Tiger Woods or Britney Spears.

Being USN most of my life, I've always lived away from family (they were in Texas or MN). I've missed out on a few things, but I don't feel that it made my life any worse. I've always liked having my family out of reach. If they wanted to come visit, they did. I've also come home to visit many times. When one moves to a new area, they can always make new friends, find baby sitters, etc.

I understand your hesitation, but if you can find a good job, I'd move in a heartbeat.

We left ALL our family in Colorado and moved, and it has been an adventure.

Losing the babysitter would be tough, but in 5 yrs she'll be in school anyway, and just need a little bit of afterschool care.

And you wouldn't be TOO far away from the folks.


Who knows...you might meets some studly Georgia outdoorsy type if you move!

My life right now too.

I hate NY with a passion...the cold almost year around,the taxes just name it.
Mom is in a nursing home and when she went in a year and a half ago thought it was finally my chance to escape from the hell hole as I no longer had to take care of her.

Leaving her to die there has so far proven to be something I can`t bring myself to do.

Do a positive/negative list....writing it down on paper helps.

It's hard to be away from family for major events.....in my case it was the birth of my children and my divorce. I would have loved to have had some close by family support...not necessarily my family ::)  but you make a family with close friends when you move away from family.

To me....the most important issue to deal with first ....is can you find a job at a salary you can be happy with, and a job that's at least as secure as the one you have.

The next one would be child care if your daughter gets sick or you have to go out of town.

Can you even sell your existing house and get your investment back?

Pretty much everything else will just fall into place.

I hear ya...I moved to Florida away from NY...but they followed me here...lol.  My dad loves Georgia, I wouldn't be surprised if he convinces my mom to move up there...but my mom loves Florida... :mental:

Yes, the school system here is the shitters....When I talk to some of the "kids" here, I'm just in awe of how little they know.  Say what you will about NY...but I did have a good education there...and not only that..but in NY..the kids are motivated to excel.  The teachers here are part of the problem.

In GA, the schools are better, I looked into the schools in my district and they are do well in the FCATS...good sports programs too...and when she gets older...she has UGA and Georgia Tech in the area....I think my daughter would be a better, well-rounded child/adult if she grew up in Georgia.

I'd move to the Emerald Coast (Pensacola to Mexico Beach/Port St. Joe) in a New York second. SE Florida? Nope.

As for moving away, my decision wasn't too hard about where I was not going back after ETSing. I'm from Jackson, Mississippi. Hence why I live in Evans, Ga (Augusta).

I would not voluntarily move away from my Mom again.  I did not move to a better state (CA from TX) and I didn't do it by choice but I also didn't realize how much I would miss my Mom until I no longer had her around.  It has become abundantly clear how much she helped me out when I had issues like this eye thing going on.  I also feel so lucky that my Mom was around when my kids were little.  For my son she wasn't around until he was about 6 so I didn't know what I was missing...now I know what I'm missing.  :(

In the past 10+ years, I've lived in five different states. Bought four homes, sold three.

I am SICK of moving. But I think we'll move one more time -- back to Jackson, TN.  :bawl:   :banghead:
