Troops Finding New Service as Teachers

Troops Finding New Service as Teachers

By BERNIE BECKER
Published: December 5, 2009

WASHINGTON — In her last job in the Air Force, Tammie Langley gave prospective pilots and navigators an introduction to aeronautics. Four years later, Ms. Langley is in a different sort of classroom, teaching sixth graders in North Carolina everything from reading to math.

The settings may be radically different, but Ms. Langley said the transition from teaching 22-year-olds to teaching 11- or 12-year-olds had been fairly seamless. “Either way, you still have to kind of wipe their noses a bit and kick them in the behind every now and then,” said Ms. Langley, who is in her second year at Kannapolis Intermediate School, about 25 miles north of Charlotte.

Ms. Langley, 36, became a schoolteacher in large part because of Troops to Teachers, a federal program that, over 15 years, has helped about 12,000 former service members transition into second careers in the classroom. Now, a bipartisan group in Congress is hoping to expand the program to allow more veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan to sign up, while also increasing the number of places in which they could find employment.

Not all of the veterans who enter the classroom with the help of Troops to Teachers, some of whom are up to a generation older than teachers starting right out of college, share Ms. Langley’s background in formal instruction. But the program’s supporters and participants say that military service in general provides the sort of discipline and life experiences that translate well to teaching.

“My very first sergeant said, ‘Practice doesn’t make perfect,’ ” said Moises Perez, 50, a social studies teacher in Clayton County, Ga., who spent nearly 24 years in the Army, including service in Afghanistan. “He said, ‘Perfect practice makes perfect.’ That’s what I want to teach the kids.”

C. Emily Feistritzer, president of the National Center for Education Information, said: “We’re finding that these teachers seem to be able to really manage a classroom from the start, which is the biggest problem a lot of teachers have going in. And they come in thinking all children can learn, without any sort of socioeconomic biases.”

It's a long thread , and predictable but with a few supporting the idea.

Considering the last 3 years in the Navy as a recruiter, one of my biggest functions was giving nuclear power presentations to (supposedly) the "best and brightest" utes in the Los Angeles area.

Frankly, I was NOT impressed.  And ex-military might not last horribly long, when they realize that the inmates are running the asylum, and that discipline is a joke--and that's among the faculty.  Unless parents and the administration backed them up when students got out of line, I would imagine the turnover for former military becoming teachers would be fairly high.

My girlfriend is a high school teacher and judging from her stories I know I could never be one. And she's in a very nice school in a good district. I'd hate to go to a not so nice district, which I think programs like T2T requires for x number of years.

She's trying to figure out another career choice so she can get out.

I'll admit that it takes a special person to want to become a teacher, most of the time.  Union leadership is a huge part of the problem, imo, but I don't know what happens to so many teachers to lose the thing that made them want to be teachers.

I think the DUmmies are more afraid that ex-military teachers may start counter acting the liberal indoctrination that is present in most school systems.

And there it is. Left wing indoctrination good. Reality of life bad.

You mean like all the kiddies doing Obama worship we've seen over the past 18 months?  How many of those videos have been "disappeared" from the Internet because you couldn't stand the truth?

It's really puzzling. Veterans are unqualified right-wing bigots when it comes to teaching, but DUmmies always say that only veterans are qualified to make decisions on war and peace. Veterans must be a strange bunch of chameleons.

The dysmenopausal school teacher is going apeshit about vets in the program not being real teachers and are degrading the profession...

And here I thought that was because of the teachers unions...

Projection perhaps. If you listen to her posts, she's the archetype of the perfect teacher.  :whatever:

93. Summary of thread

Of course democrats support the Troops! Of course we support veterans benefits!

(But we never forget they are generally right wing authoritarian assholes with the mental capacity of beavis and butthead, who should be prohibited from working around children. Sure would be nice if WE got all the perks vets get, lucky bastards.)

lovely.

I remember when we used to post up republican scorecards of how they voted for veteran benefits, and the consensus was that the politicians who didn't support vet benefits were assholes. We were proud that democrats DID vote on behalf of veterans.

Considering their avid support for gay teachers, "tolerance" teaching, and the delight they take in the idea that Christian kids must end up in public school or college..."and we get them, then"...this post is so ironic.   :thatsright:

A very good friend of mine is a retired USAF Master Sergeant who went through Georgia's TAPP program about 6 years ago. He's also became one of Georgia's certified master teachers last year.

DUmmies don't know shit. I'll take him over that Greenbriar dumbass any day of the week.

Hey Reb correct me if I'm wrong...but I seem to remember this program getting off the ground during Billy Jeff's time in office.  It was one of the bright ideas his staff came up with to employ all the military members they were tossing out of the service.

Don't know, but I don't think the DUmbasses understand that anyone accepted into Georgia's TAPP program must have a degree and works on a probationary basis for a while. They also have about a years worth of training sessions and meetings with peer groups. My buddy busted his ass and obtained his Master's and also had to bust his ass to obtain that master teacher cert. Ex-military make perfect teachers in a society where the kids are getting out of hand. I don't think it would be a surprise which one parents would pick over one another, a retired military person, or Greenbriar who can't spell worth a damn.

Some try it and find out it's not for them, overall it is a pretty good idea.

From my Sister's experiences teaching, crazy superintendents, principals that think they run a harem or henhouse (depending on their gender), teacher cliques and liaisons, aggressively hovering interventionist parents, and school board members who are crooks or just too stupid and headstrong to understand how clueless they really are each contribute about as much to the problems in our schools as the unions do.
