Cave will be sealed with man's body inside‎
« on: November 28, 2009, 12:09:27 AM »
Quote
Nutty Putty cave will be sealed permanently with the 26-year-old medical student's body inside, a decision supported by his family and rescue officials, who said retrieving him is too great a risk to rescuers. They also cited a desire to protect the safety of future cavers.

"The cave will serve as the final resting place for John Edward Jones," said Utah County sheriff's Sgt. Spencer Cannon. The Jones family will place a permanent memorial at the cave's entrance.

Jones died late Wednesday after becoming stuck in an unmapped finger of the cave near the end of the main passageway, about 100 feet below the surface and 400 feet from the entrance, not near "Bob's Push" as previously described.

Rescuers briefly pulled him out of the crevice using pulley system and ropes tied to his feet, but he slipped back in after an anchor broke free of the cave wall.

[Jones] is thought to have died of the effects of the constant pressure on his body.

There have been several cases like this. This is why spelunking has never ever appealed to me. I could never put myself into a crawlspace and have the rock shift and pin me...Being stuck like that until I die is just too horrible to contemplate.

Rest in Peace, Mr Jones.

Yeah, I can't imagine getting stuck like that - 10 inch space. With a wife, baby and another on the way, he had too much responsibility to be doing that. At least, I wouldn't have.

I'm sorry the guy is dead...and feel very sorry for his family.

I know I sound judgemental....but I also think he was pretty irresponsible to do go caving. There is almost always risk involved. Which in turn creates risk for the rescue people. There are several cave rescues around here every year.

A slow agonizing death....If you fall from climbing a mountain, or skydiving, its quick. I cannot imagine how horrible it would be to die in a 10 inch crawlspace. The rock shifts, your stuck, slowly being squeezed to death. and its a cold death as well. cold stone, cold tomb.

I agree with the authorities: seal the cave.

It is a bad way to go. I have a little claustrophobia so I would probably have a heart attack. One time my Cub Scout Den went to a cave tour somewhere (I don't remember where it was. Virginia I think) and even though it was all lit up, with a tour guide and all, I was uneasy.

At one time I went caving quite often, I hate to say it, but this guy probably knew he was in an unstable area. We ALWAYS checked the stability of a new area, and never went in alone.

Collins became trapped in a narrow crawlway fifty-five feet below the surface. The reports about efforts to save Collins became a nationwide newspaper sensation, the first such since the sinking of the Titanic. After four days during which Collins could be brought water and food, a collapse in the cave closed the entrance passageway to everything except voice contact. Collins died of exposure, thirst, and starvation after about fourteen days underground, three days before a dug rescue shaft could reach his position. Collins's body was recovered two months later.
Two weeks to die! Unable to move, pressed between walls of cold stone...

If God meant for me to crawl around in a narrow cave 55 feet below ground....He would have made me a different animal....a bat, a bug.....

When my daughter was in Girl Scouts in middle school....the troop leaders decided an overnight in Tuckaleechee Caverns would be a good idea.

In order for the kid to go, the mom had to go. Of course my daughter wanted to go.

The only way into the area where camping was allowed....was to crawl. I was told it was super pitch dark once the lights were turned off at a particular time....flashlights were required.

I'm claustrophobic.

Trip had to be cancelled because of weather and was not rescheduled.

My daughter was disappointed.....I did a happy dance..... :-)

I'll stay away from exploring caves but I have been to Meramec and Onondaga caverns in Missouri , they were well worth seeing.

Anyone see the movie The Descent?
