Attempt to deep-fry turkey causes N. Babylon blaze
« on: November 26, 2009, 04:17:36 PM »
Quote
An attempt to deep fry a turkey sparked a house fire that damaged the home's exterior and a rear deck Thursday, a fire official said.

About 35 firefighters responded to a home on Mell Drive in North Babylon to douse flames started when oil from a deep frying turkey spilled.

"They put it in too fast," said John Schneidawin, chief of the North Babylon Fire Department. "The oil boiled over." ...
North Babylon is on Long Island, so congratulations Florida for not being the site of the first deep fried turkey disaster of 2009.   :-)

And to think, the other day I actually saw an infomercial for an INDOOR turkey fryer.

I just saw them on TV this morning. These were electric ones that were just made bigger to hold a small sized turkey.

That being said, I did use one of the regular turkey fryers in the house one year with no disastrous effects.

Thing is, I'd bet that you were smart enough to have the turkey either fresh, or completely thawed, when it went into the fryer.

Of course.  I also put down plywood with wet towels around the cooker and had two fire extinguishers within reach.
