I am cooking Thanksgiving dinner for just the 5 of us + daughter's boyfriend. My son had double knee surgery a week ago Tuesday and it gave me a ready excuse to opt out of the mass gathering. I love my family, but there was some drama at a 50th anniversary this past summer that I would rather not reconstitute at this time.

Yeah, I know how those family things go, but it's been a long time.

It's not the same without the patriarch and the matriarch at the table.

The cats are getting white turkey meat in the morning, while I'm going to indulge in one of my private joys, slices of cheddar cheese dipped into sour cream, as if potato chips. And eggnog.

It makes for a Hell of a stomachache sooner or later, but it's something done only rarely.

It's supposed to be cold in the Sandhills of Nebraska, but no snow.

I'll be working on the final 2010 edition of DU for....., with the hopes of posting it this holiday weekend.

I figure by Christmas all will be right again among the clan. The said thing is, it is a brother inlaw who is causing the problems while my sister enables his bad behavior. For example, he cannot eat real cranberries, they must come from the can. Not only can he not eat them, he has to piss and moan about real cranberries even when he has his canned ones especially prepared for him. Real cranberries are a tradition with my mom, she serves it from the same bowl that her mother served cranberries from. That infuriates me. It's petty and those bad manners should have been corrected a long time ago.

The cheddar cheese / sour cream combo with eggnog sounds delicious. I may have to try it. Enjoy your day Frank and I look forward to the final 2009 (?) edition of DU!

Happy Thanksgiving WE and the rest of the Cave Divers.

Been up since 4 getting things ready with Momma. She just left for a 9 hour shift today. After 4 days of raging she's finally at peace with it, thank God. :innocent:

The Turkey has been in the smoker since 5 with an ETA around the same as her time. Then we're off to the eldest DIL's for the gathering. Dad & 1 Brother are due over sometime today to help break in the new HDTV to Thanksgiving Football,

then they'll go on over with us for the ~~grubfest~~ Thanksgiving Feast.

What looked to be a disaster last weekend is going to turn out to be pretty good. It's just going to depend on my abilities to cook the biggest damn thing I've ever cooked before.

I would say he needs a ball tapping. (love that expression

) He is just a self-centered ass who has to control everything. My sister is way too accomodating, I would have either given him a ball tapping or cut him loose a long time ago.

The bird is in the oven,
the bird has been stuffed,
the cauliflower fritters are done,
the broccoli-rabe has been boiled and ready to be stir-fryed with garlic,
the sweet potatoes are cleaned,
the artichokes are stuffed,
the corn on the cob is clean and ready to be boiled...
the turkey broth is simmering and awaiting their tortellini's.
The sweet potato pie is done, the whipping cream got whipped with some Kahlua.

The gravy isn't made yet.
