Winger Ringerdinger

In a rare bit of good luck I got to the grocery store just as the front handicap parking space was being vacated. As I was heading into the store the Salvation Army bellringer was setting up. Having paid for my small bag of goodies I kept the coins from the change in my hand, ready to drop them into the red kettle. While dropping the coins into the slot I glanced up and noted that the bellringer was wearing a jacket with a veteran's patch on it, so when he thanked me for my donation I thanked him for his service. He smiled, then gave me one of those do-I-know-you-from-somewhere looks. I just smiled back and gave him one of those little toodleloo waves.

I had recognized him from several town-hall meetings. Suffice it to say that he isn't given to making kind remarks about 'libruls'. Anyway, I was thinking that his present task might present him with some opportunities to alter his perspective a bit. Then I glanced over and saw him frowning as he noticed my numerous bumper stickers, easily read as I was parked not twenty feet away from his position. His glower intensified as he turned and glared at the red bucket as though trying to figure out how to turn it upside down to shake out my tainted offering.

On Friday I have to go back to that store, as my pharmacy is located there. This could get interesting.

After the 9/11 Red Cross BS and the United Way with the Boy Scouts (former Eagle Scout0, I only give to the Salvation Army.  The Salvation Army has the lowest overhead (no comparison to the previously mentioned non-profits) there by getting my money to where I intended it to go.
When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

4. I don't donate to the Salvation Army, due to their intolerance
for GLBT people. I donate at this time of year to rescue missions and homeless shelters. I check, and only those who don't discriminate in any way get our donations.

After Spurs explains how the Salvation Army helped her out a great deal at a point in her life, and how appreciative she was for it, DCKit makes what could become the stupidest post of the day:

5. Sheesh. He probably thinks that the Salvation Army gives it all to bankers and CEOs.
I can't imagine, for the life of me, what any winger would be doing collecting money for the less fortunate.

Considering that it has been proven that conservatives donate more the charitable organizations than liberals, it would make sense that there are many conservatives collecting money for the less fortunate as well.

I always smile when I see the Salvation Army bell ringers.  They make me feel better about society.   :cheersmate:

Charities rely on conservatives for the same reason that Willie Sutton relied on banks.

That is a good point; the DU poster seems rather capable of getting around without too much assistance, which suggests that she might be one of those "lucky" souls who, being able-bodied themselves, have a handicapped sticker courtesy of someone else.  It's entirely possible that that was the focus of the bell-ringer's ire.

Thing is, I used to work with someone at the lab who had a handicapped parking sticker, and looking at him, you'd never be able to guess why.  It was because he had some kind of heart condition where his heart would not pump faster if he was exerting himself--running, for example.  His heart would continue to pump its normal rate, even though his muscles needed the additional oxygen that would be delivered by an increased heart rate.  I suppose that I should have been a tad more curious about it, but I never was.  No, he wasn't a lefty--actually, he was about as conservative as anyone on this site.

My grandfather has a disabled placard for a similar reason. He has had three heart attacks, and his heart is only functioning at something like 35% now, so he can't exert himself excessively.  Mind you, he doesn't usually park in the handicapped parking if there is spot within a reasonable walking distance, but he has the option.

Because conservatives live their values, liberals just drone on and on about theirs, in between spewing venom and hatred about anyone who thinks differently than them.
