CT scan today in an hour

Never had one of these done before.  Hopefully it won't take long.

CT scans are pretty dull.  You lie on a gurney and its all automated from there.  You're inside a narrow tube for about 15-20 minutes and watch the scanner rotate around you.

You sure you're not thinking about an MRI?  The MRI's I've had I was in a narrow tube ... the CAT scans I've had done were rather large 'ring' type things .... I'm thinking 4 foot in diameter and they were quick .... done in like a couple of minutes.  The MRI's were considerably longer shots.

Wishing you good results.

CTs are a breeze even if they're with contrast.  MRIs and PETS take a lot longer and the MRIs are incredibly loud without headphones.

I've had dozens of CAT scans, and they're always the same.  I don't remember ever having an MRI.  Is it possible to use the same piece of equipment for both procedures.

No. A CT scan is based on the X-ray machine. It's like shooting a 100 real time x-rays. The MRI is Magnetic Resonance Imaging, based on magnetism. I'm sure that soon they'll have a machine that does both. The CT scan can be dangerous because of the overexposure to X-rays. However, some people cannot be subjected to MRIs, so there is no other option than the CT scan. (people with pacemakers, sub-dermal insulin pumps, pain management protocols that use electronic stimulus, etc.) I've had a couple of CT scans in my life and several MRIs.

I know before I had my first MRI they had to x-ray my head to make sure I didn't have any metal in my eyes.  It kind of freaked me out because no one mentioned it to me but as they were wheeling me into the MRI room I noticed a small sign that said something to the effect of "If you are or ever have been a welder, machinist, etc .... please let the technician know".  When I saw that sign I told the tech pushing me that I had been a welder for a long time.  He stopped immediately and turned me around and said "Oooops, we need x-rays first!"

I kind of thought that was a pretty big oversight.  Glad I saw the sign.

Oh, stop arguing about what a CT scan is or isn't, you big babies.  They laid me down (the ceiling was decorated with backlit photos of blue sky and blossoming branches), stuck me in the donut-shaped thing, injected me with dye, told me to hold my breath a couple times and scanned me.  In all, it took about 10 minutes in the door and out again. 


Now I have to drink a lot of water so I can pee the dye out.  Yay.

I've had several MRIs in the past. One was an open sided MRI. That was just fine. The others were enclosed and I had a little claustrophobia with them, but that was handled by placing a towel over my eyes. No major deal. Most recently, I had to undergo two-two hour MRIs. The tube seemed smaller than I recall and it was a very tight fit. I would up having to take a couple of Xanax in order to overcome my claustrophobia. Between the Xanax and a towel over my eyes, I did OK. It did get very uncomfortable the very last part of the second session. I was sweating because, apparently, the magnets made me warm, or so I was told.

They found a small nodule in my lower left lung, but it sounds like inflammation has been what has been causing my recent problems. My bronchoscopy is early Wed. morning.

I don't know.  They probably won't find much now.  My coughing and hacking up junk is almost gone.  I don't know exactly where this nodule is or if they can get the bronchoscope down to it.  I talked to a nurse friend and we kind of doubted that they'd do a biopsy of such a small nodule (5 mm).  They want me to have another CT in 6 months to see if it's growing, so I would think they'd wait to do a biopsy then if it is growing and leave well enough alone for now.

The last "open" MRI that I had was not open like I was used to, it was still a tube...it was for an MRI of my lower back, and I made her put me in backwards...so my head would be able to see out...

Back in the 80's I had a bad expercience with a very tight & loud MRI, I asked them to stop and let me out and she said "just 8 more minutes." I freaked out and never went back!!
