New guidelines for cervical cancer screenings
« on: November 21, 2009, 07:40:01 AM »
Women can wait till age 21 for cervical cancer screenings according to new guidelines.

The following is a partial transcript; for full story, listen to audio

Earlier this week, a government physicians' group, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, issued a recommendation that women with no underlying risk factors for breast cancer wait until they are 50 before getting regular mammograms. Until that point, the recommended age for the screening was 40.

Today, the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology issued a recommendation of its own. That group says women shouldn't get the pap smear test that screens for cervical cancer until they are 21. They also said women should get the tests less frequently than many do now: once every two years for women under 30 and once every three years for women over 30.  ...

My daughter had her first child at 27.

She had had a pap a few months before she got pregnant. It was normal.

She had another pap when she went back for her 6 wk checkup after my grandson was born. The results came back that she had "abnormal cells", it was repeated 3 months later, and again in another 3 months. Results were the same. After the third test....she had laser surgery to remove them.

Years ago, I knew a woman who had "abnormal cells" at her yearly pap. She wasn't quite 30. Married, no children, quite vivacious, had a college degree but decided to sell Jags, and was their top salesperson. She was diagnosed with vaginal cancer. I think she was about 32 when she died, after having had multiple surgeries, and chemo several times. There was no family history of cancer.

Between the breast screening guidelines being changed and now pap smear test being changed all in one week....makes me think that women might as well have a bulls-eye tattooed onto their foreheads and play Russian roulette.  :maddernhell:

My mom made me go for my first when I was 17 or 18.  At 20, I was diagnosed for abnormal cells, and had to have laser surgery.  After that, I had tests every 6 months, and now I am at every year.  22 years later, and I am ok.  Under these new guidelines, I don't know if I would even be here to type this.  This crap is starting to really piss me off.

I had to have cervical surgery at 19 because of precancerous cells.  Wonder what kind of cells I would have had at 21?

This whole situation really pisses me off.

There was an editorial in our local paper today, and this woman was complaining that she had a stereoptic biopsy, had a bruised breast for 6 weeks, a wicked scar and all for nothing. She said she is now deformed.

Boohoo....I say  :bs:

My lumpectomies all started out the same way with the needle guide the size of a pencil jabbed into me, and scars about an inch and a half each....

I've got 3 scars...all on one side. I'm not the least "deformed".....in fact for a woman my age, two kids that I breast fed....mine look pretty damn good if I do say so myself!!

And I'll take every damn one of those scars too..... cause it sure beats the hell out of the alternative.

I hear ya.  I had complications from the surgery on my cervix, and ended up unable to stay pregnant.  Yeah, that sucks, but I am pretty happy I am just here to say that.

My daughter has had to have it again....she's been lucky. She was able to carry the latest one to term, but I think it helps that she had c-sections with both. Dr told her, if they weren't able to do the surgery by laser she could end up with too much scar tissue to get pregnant, or may have to have her cervix sewn shut to keep the baby in. Now that she has one of each, I kind of hope she quits. The women on one side of the family...my generation and my daughter's....we haven't had really good track records with our "parts"...both my cousin and I had hysterectomies young - she was in her late 30's, I was 41. Our girls have both had problems too.

But hey.....those pesky little pap tests really aren't necessary.....

I'm sure - I just don't understand this administration's desire to piss off women by making recommendations via a wholly-owned government 'agency' ahead of ObamaCare.

I personally know more than my share of women who have had issues involving their lady parts who may have been far more seriously injured or even killed if it weren't for early screenings that this administration is now trying to erase.

Is it true that early screenings lead to more false positives ? Absolutely.
But this is also true.

A woman who is diagnosed with breast cancer in the US has a better than 90% chance of Surviving. Whereas in The United Kingdom, that chance is slightly less than 80% - the only real difference in medicine and technology is that the UK uses the recommendations for breast cancer screens that the United States is suddenly hot to implement.

The bumper sticker logo is 10% more American women will die from breast cancer under Obamacare. -- But hey, Illegal aliens will get free medical, so it all works out in the end.

Nobody is saying that you ladies must comply with the new guidelines.

Personally, I'd opt for the annual routine.

But once mandatory government health care kicks in, you will have to follow the new once every 2 years during the age bracket mandated by the government.

Right ....no one is saying that women must comply with the new guidelines....

But...good luck getting insurance to pay for them.

2 years? A woman could be dead or at the very least...beyond cure....in that amount of time.
