Figures...
« on: November 17, 2009, 08:13:08 AM »
WARNING: Gross topic ahead.  You have been warned.

I had been having lung issues after being sick with the flu (which was most likely H1N1, I guess) and  had been coughing up bright red blood in the junk from my lungs in the mornings.  This happened for several days in a row.  I decided to finally go to the clinic Saturday morning.  After the exam, they gave me some sample cups to collect what I was hacking up for three mornings.  But wouldn't you know it, the following day and since then I haven't been coughing up noticeable amounts of blood.  Isn't that how things always work?  Anyway, I went ahead and did the collection these last three days and will bring the samples in just to see if they can find anything that I can't see.

I guess the lesson to be learned is not to procrastinate with stuff like this.

I did the same thing when I had the H1N1 flu.  Freaked me out the first time!

Glad that it has gone away.  It is good that you did the collection anyways, they'll be able to confirm that it hasn't turned into anything nasty like pneumonia  :cheersmate:

Well, I might have been starting to get pneumonia a couple weeks ago.  They listened to my lungs and took a chest X-ray, but it wasn't conclusive one way or the other, so they put me on Z-Pack just to be safe (particularly because I suffer from asthma, too).

Generally bright red blood comes from irritation of the esophagus from chronic productive cough. It's the dark brown stuff that is the scarierest because its deep inside the lungs.

If you were one of the soldiers under my care I'd refer you to the MO but since you are under said care I'm out of advice.

I can certainly second that....Mrs. doc had H1N1 about a month ago, and didn't take our Dr.s advice.....a week later she landed in the ER with pneumonia in both lungs, and spent the next five days on IV electrolytes and antibiotics.....two weeks later and she is still recovering.  It will be a month this upcoming Friday from first onset for her......and she is still recovering.....

Not to be messed with.....

So here's the situation now.  The lab results came back tonight and showed the presence of atypical cells which may or may not indicate a problem.  I need to have a CT scan and a bronchoscopy next week.

Yikes. Keep us posted okay? Take care and don't push yourself too hard. These things can't be taken lightly.

No, my friends, there’s only one really progressive idea. And that is the idea of legally limiting the power of the government. That one genuinely liberal, genuinely progressive idea — the Why in 1776, the How in 1787 — is what needs to be conserved. We need to conserve that fundamentally liberal idea. That is why we are conservatives. --Bill Whittle

Atypical cells are something that aren't necessarily worrisome.  They can be caused by mundane reasons (inflammation, for instance, which I undoubtedly have with my asthma and continual coughing) and can clear up on their own or with treatment.
