Follow-Up on Puppygate.

HONOLULU —  The United States Marines Corps condemned a YouTube video purportedly showing a Marine viciously mistreating a puppy as "deplorable" on Tuesday and promised that a full investigation is under way.

In the clip, an as-yet unidentified Marine apparently throws the young dog off a rocky cliff as he's joking with another Marine.

"The video is shocking and deplorable and is contrary to the high standards we expect of every Marine," Major Chris Perrine, the public affairs director at the Marine Corps base in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, said in a statement.

"This video came to our attention this morning, and we have initiated an investigation," he said. "We do not tolerate this type of behavior and will take appropriate action."

Perrine said it appears that the man in the video is a lance corporal based with a unit in the Hawaiian islands. But his actions weren't characteristic of those of most men and women who serve, Perrine added.

"The vast majority of Marines conduct their duties in an honorable manner that brings great credit upon the Marine Corps and the United States," he said. "There have been numerous stories of Marines adopting pets and bringing them home from Iraq or helping to arrange life-saving medical care for Iraqi children.

"Those are the stories that exemplify what we stand for and how most Marines behave."

The low-quality clip shows two Marines joking as one holds up what appears to be a motionless black and white puppy, which he then hurls into a rocky gully.

“Oh, I tripped,” the man in the clip said as the puppy was thrown.

An unseen man could be heard saying: “That’s mean. That was mean, Motari.”

A yelping sound is heard as it flies through the air.

The authenticity of the clip, which has been viewed more than 145,000 times since it was uploaded onto file-sharing Web site YouTube in the last two days, has not been verified — although forum members and bloggers have been frantically trying to track down details of the soldier.

"Certainly there's a lot of outrage and a lot of people are upset about it. I think every Marine is upset about this video," Perrine said. “We will investigate and take appropriate action and make sure our Marine is safe as well.

"That is mistreatment of a puppy. That is a violation of anybody's standards, and the Marine Corps sets extremely high standards."

A name is already being tossed around, from what I've seen.

David Motari.

I found his profile at Bebo, earlier, but it's been switched to private.

Here is a page that screen-captured the profile.

Monroe family threatened over puppy throwing video

By KOMO Staff & News Services

MONROE, Wash. -- The controversial Internet video that purports to show a Marine throwing a puppy off a rocky cliff has triggered threats and harrassment against a local family related to the Marine shown in the video.

The low-quality video shows two Marines joking before one hurls the puppy into a rocky gully. A yelping sound is heard as it flips through the air.

The U.S. Marine Corps has identified the man who appears to throw the dog as a 22-year-old lance corporal. KOMO 4 News has learned the Marine's family lives in Monroe, though his name has not been released by military officials.

Why threaten the family for one person's action? I am reserving judgement about this.

Well, I'm hoping we'll hear something in the next week regarding the investigation.  The Marines are already questioning several people, which does include the guy who is  purportedly the one who threw the puppy.

Killing the puppy, if he did, was a horrible action.  However, responding by threatening harm to his family is just moronic.

Looks like he and his family is getting the same fate as Lori Drew. However, Lori Drew did something much more atrocious by causing a 13 year old girl to commit suicide.

Well, Lori deserves what ever befalls her.  The family of the Marine does not.  They didn't do anything, just their pathetic son.

I pray this is a fake -- a few old-teens with too much time on their hands who are creating a stupid simulation.

I recently lost my cat of 25 years.  I cry for her almost as much as I do for my Mom's loss.  Grief is a very strong emotion.

My take is that we humans have been caretakers of animals for many years.

We have a sacred trust to our pets -- we love you and take care of you.  You just tell us you know.

She's not the only one guilty in it. Her family was involved, from daughter and possibly husband, who thought it was a bad idea, but did nothing to stop it and was likely involved.
