Poll question: Should we pick large national charities or smaller, more targeted charities? (DU Fund Drive)

As I explained in two earlier posts, next week is Democratic Underground's Fourth Quarter Donation Drive. In the spirit of "giving back" for Thanksgiving, the DU Admins thought it might be worthwhile to select a charity each day to receive 10% of the funds donated to Democratic Underground that day.

Earlier this week, DUers suggested a number of great charites to benefit from the 10% promotion. I encourage everyone to take a look at all the suggested charities -- it is a fantastic list, with a number of well-known national charities, as well as smaller, more targeted (sometimes local) charities.

With so many charities to choose from, the DU Admins are having a difficult time coming up with a final list of six. One thing we are trying to decide is whether to pick large charities, smaller charities, or a mix of both. Here's our thinking:

Large, national charities - The benefit of choosing large, national charities, is that we would have a wide list of general themes which should appeal to the broadest range of DUers. We think almost everyone here would be able to find at least one charity (and probably many) that they support. The downside, I think, is that our total contribution to all the charities (probably totaling between $2,000 and $3,000) will be a tiny drop in a very large bucket.

Smaller, more targeted (and local) charities - The benefit of choosing smaller charities is that our small contributions would have a bigger impact. Also, we would be giving some visibility to organizations that are doing good work, but are not well known. Our contribution would likely be going to a specific project, rather than a very broad range of different things.

A mix of large and small charities - Perhaps we should get the "best of both worlds" and pick a few large charities and a few small charities. (This is the option that the DU Admins are leaning toward right now.)

So, what do you think?

I think you should allow the donator a choice of charity or at least a choice of a few categories to send their 10% to.

If someone wishes to support a specific charity, they should donate on that charity's assigned day.

9. at last I have a small amount of money to donate to DU so I don't want part of it to go to a charity. should I just wait to donate untill the charity thing is over?

12. At this particular time, I would prioritize Planned Parenthood as the major recipient with other charities in the mix.

Planned Parenthood is continually under attack and especially at this time needs support. Many reasons here: 1) To support an organization that actively provides critical services and professional, truly health-oriented help to millions. 2) A large donation to P.P. would make a STRONG statement against the Stupass amendment and the stream of fascist misogyny underlying it. 3) the real-life suffering that they ease goes far beyond the individual tragedies averted by P.P. -- every opportunity to control one's reproduction, every unwanted birth prevented helps to reduce poverty, crime, and other destructive forces of overpopulation.

Along with Planned Parenthood, a specific project charity would be interesting. Curious as to what specific projects would be chosen.....

To reiterate my vote, I think Planned Parenthood is the priority at this political moment, and a BIG opportunity to amplify a focused action.

I've already mentioned upthread the magnitude of P.P.'s impact.

OMC's remark made me think some more...

more bang for the buck: the intensity of national attention on the issue now increases awareness. Because of the political climate and the blatant, legislature level attack on women's health, a large donation to P.P. would be magnified by the topical relevance, and probably get noticed. That would extend the visibility of this issue. That means we as a group could help MORE people.

I heartily support corollary donations, and wish that issues like homelessness and animal abuse could get some focused attention.

It's already pretty obvious what the main "charity"'s going to be.

I presume the overall target or goal will remain the same but will just need more donations to get there now.
A ploy to get donations is all.

This is a minority opinion, but I don't think my fellow alum Skins and the elusive engimtic Elad pay themselves well enough, for overseeing the primitives.

It's a thankless job, the primitives being rectal aperture jerks.

I don't get why someone who wants to donate to a charity would do so through DU and let Skimmer take the write off.   They can't see through this ploy.
