I'm sure there are both agnostics and atheists who don't support equal rights, but neither have organized to target GLBT rights. The ballot measures (to repeal) in California and Maine were funded in large measure with funds from the Mormon and Catholic churches. Right now the representative for the Washington, D.C. Archdiocese is actively battling against equal rights in the District, along with local pastors of major Christian denominations (mostly A.M.E. and Baptist).

Wherever you find organized efforts and tons of money being poured into efforts to persecute the GLBT community, you will find the organization and money provided by Christian churches. Those are the faces behind the protest signs of hatred, those are the hands placing dollars in the collection plates of persecution. So you'll have to pardon those of us who are just sick and tired of this shit.

Let the gays and other assorted misfits keep this bullshit up. Those that really are Christians there, yet perhaps are a little confused by wordly ideals too will eventually be turned off by this type of thing and probably lean more towards conservatism. I'm sure to the more moderate; the fact that Christians aren't out there killing gays in droves is not lost on them, yet their are militant gays who publicly will admit to wanting Christians dead.

The sheer off balance of the two things here that have happened is glaring. Most people, even moderates, have decided that legal, they do not want to legitimize gay marriage. It may be as much an expression of not wanting to burden an already overburdened economy then an outright shunning of gay marriage itself(a point lost on the gay militia). ON the other side, the gay militia wants all people who disagree with them dead and the reason they want people dead(a hateful act we'd all agree)? Because they consider not agreeing to legitimize their unions to be hateful. 

So in the end, if we are to read this right, both sides hate the other so it's best man wins. Boy, the gay militia really put themselves in a pickle on this one given that since in the end everyone will fight for themselves if it comes out in a battle of survival and given they are 1-2 percent of the population(and probably a lot less that are gay militia types) this is a battle they might want to reconsider. their number are more like those of Christians in Rome when feeding a Christian to the lion was in vogue. Whose likely to be standing in the arena this time around?

To those DUers that are Christians reading this. Seriously, it's time to consider your allegiance...to Christ or the world. Look at what the world breeds. Do you really see most Christians advocating this kind of hatred? You may not agree with every Christian, but you know your Christian brethren are restrained from primal instincts by God. Sure, they may sin terribly regardless and do, but that restraint, as we see on DU and in the WH now, is a very important thing in a civilized society. It breeds true compassion alongside responsibility.

Okay, aside from the fact that a gay activist named theHandpuppet just screams irony and mind bleach, I'm seriously trying to rap my head around the level of hatred and rage of someone accusing others of hatred and rage over a philosophical difference. They're not asking for tolerance, they're asking for public sanction. Besides, why can't they still get married? Frankly, I don't give a rat's ass whether "the state" recognizes my union (28 years, yesterday!!!), I don't think the state should even BE in the marriage business. God's endorsement is the important one. If a gay couple find someone (a pastor, ship captain, village priestess, Club Med bartender) to marry them, to celebrate their spiritual connection so they can share it with friends and family, more power to them.

Granted, if they want "legal" rights, they have to jump through a few more hoops but that's what happens when you choose a path different than "the norm". And it really depends upon how important the union is to you. Whining every couple of years about a ballot item doesn't exactly scream "commitment". I made the decision to homeschool in a country where "public school" is the norm. My choice, my responsibility. I had to jump through more hoops than people who have their children educated by someone else and just because I think it's a superior education doesn't mean the whole damn country is going to embrace it or even grudgingly approve. There were legal obligations I had to adhere to and a profound responsibility to my sons that went well beyond the state's requirements. However, it was important enough to me that it was worth the extra effort. I'd think that 2 people who want to create a union between themselves would feel the same responsibility for each other, but evidently not.

They don't really care about the philosophical content, what they want is to be able to screw each other every time they get divorced, and by the way, their divorce rate exceeds hetero couples by a mile. Especially the older and younger couplings. I don't have the numbers handy, but it's easy to look up.

They also want the so-called tax breaks us married folks get. If they would research it at all, they'd figure out we're gettin' screwed more than they are!

I guess if they adopt, they could also be eligible for the earned income credit, but I think you needn't be married for that. Just harder to adopt with only "one" parent.
