Not sure how I feel about this...

Obama lifts ban on US entry for those with HIV

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama said Friday the U.S. will overturn a 22-year-old travel and immigration ban against people with HIV early next year.
The order will be finalized on Monday, Obama said, completing a process begun during the Bush administration.

The U.S. has been among a dozen countries that bar entry to travelers with visas or anyone seeking a green card based on their HIV status.

I wouldn't mind, as long as we (the taxpayers) don't end up paying for their medical care.

I agree.  I heard that this was initiated under President Bush, but I'm doubtful of the source of that claim.  0Bama said it during his speech when he announced this.

I have some problems with this. Historically, the US would not allow people with ANY communicable disease to enter. That's the way it should be, IMO. How many folks at Ellis Island were quarantined and returned to their country of origin?? I don't see how the US benefits from having ANYBODY coming here with ANY communicable disease. Let's consider the illegal aliens for a moment....

there is a rise in small pox, tuberculosis, and many other communicable diseases all because they are coming here without being screened. These are diseases that were once thought to have been conquered here in the US. So, now, we allow someone with a deadly disease to come here and possibly spread it?? Nuh uh...... ain't no good in my book. It's quite possible that AIDS/ HIV started here through a similar venue. Someone came here, either didn't know they had it or concealed the fact that they were ill and then started spreading it around. This won't serve the US one iota.

Who do you think is going to be paying for it?? No health insurance carrier will touch them, and it is not as though we can bill their country of origin for their care.......HIV treatment is tremendously expensive......I've read that the retroviral drugs alone to control the infection cost in excess of $30,000 per year........

You really think that Blue Cross is going to embrace these people (without government intimidation) fully knowing the effect they will have on their already increasing actuarial costs???

Instant Medicaid recipients........prepare to be screwed.

And the messiah is "dedicated to reducing the cost of healthcare"......my ass.....

I'm not sure how I feel about it.

The son of one of our closest friends died of AIDS. He was a hemopheliac that got an infected bag of factor when he was 17. He lived for 10 years. It was tragic.

Not everyone gets AIDS because they are gay or from drug use.

To put a blanket condemnation on every person with AIDS isn't fair.

I think that is a fair statement. Though i have to ask: how many people have contracted HIV in the last 10-15 years via a means other than lifestyle?

I will agree with you to an extent, however, the VAST majority of HIV infections are due to risky behavior, and are therefore preventable.......AIDS is the only terminal disease that could be conpletely wiped out in a single generation with changes in behavior......

and it begs the question as to how our blood supplies got infected in the first place ?? You wouldn't think it may have been through someone that has led a less than moral lifestyle, would you??  Nahhh, that couldn't be the answer....  :whatever:

Granted that blood transfusion problems are extremely rare....

But what about all those VA patients that were exposed to HIV, hep C and I think there was something else.

What about women that are raped, or exposed because they have husbands that slept around?

Children that have it because their mothers gave it to them in utero?

I think AIDS is like cancer....a cure could be found for both...but the medical/pharmacutical industry isn't going to give up high dollar cash cows.

There is more money being spent on AIDS/HIV research than there is on cancer (all forms), heart disease, pulmonary disease, and alzheimers COMBINED.......want to know why that is?

My son's friend has been dead for 14 years. He was infected for 10 years.

I also know of a surgeon who during surgery on a "contaminated" person....cut her finger. An incidence report was filed. No one knew the patient had AIDS...because in 1978...no hospital was testing every patient for AIDS.

Her husband died first....then her son....then she did. Both her husband and her son had it before she was diagnosed.

When you check into a hospital and they take blood for "various tests and to determine your blood type, in case it's needed".....one of those vials is for HIV/AIDS testing. Hospitals have been doing it for close to 20 years.....they just don't tell you.

Are you aware that in some states (New York for example), medical professionals, even dentists are not even allowed to ask if a patient is HIV positive??

Would you like to know why that is??

The left likes to spout that HIV/AIDS wasn't discovered until 1981. No, that's official CDC epidemic date. It's believed to have reached the US in the 60/70's. Remeber when it was called GRID?

Individuals with HIV/AIDS are a "protected class" ....and cannot be discriminated against, and I think it also has to do with HIPPA (sp?) FAIR housing laws also apply to those with HIV/AIDS....can't ask if seller/buyer is...can't tell if seller is...

Because it is protected, that's why hospitals do the test without asking or acknowleding that it's being done. The medical staff must/should be protected.

And you wonder how accidental infections happen........

In my humble opinion every person with HIV/AIDS should be required to have a "biohazard symbol" tattooed on their forehead.......

Why would they be a "protected class".......I can remember when TB and Polio were rampant in my youth......those patients were not "protected".......when someone becomes infected with Ebola, or Marberg (nearly 100% fatal) they are not "protected"........

Do you really want to know why this is???

I know EXACTLY why that is.... it's their less than moral or questionable lifestyle. And those people have spread their infections to the innocent.

Precisely.......the politicians, and the screaming liberals don't want their "pet constituancies" to have to undergo any discomfort because of what they did to themselves.....to hell with everyone that has to come into contact with them.......

If memory serves me correctly, nearly 90% of new HIV cases (in the US) come from two distinct groups......

......Homosexuals

.....IV drug users (of which over 70% are either black or hispanic)

Two pet constituancies of the Democrats.....and the reason why AIDS/HIV gets the vast majority of the research funding.......because it is a "quest" to ensure that the gays (and drug addicts) can continue their lifestyle without worrying about dying as a result........forget the fact that the annual deaths from cancer and heart disease in the rest of the population outnumber the deaths from HIV/AIDS, by a factor of 786,000 to 1..........we must find a cure for AIDS first.......

Sorry, but this pisses me off........

I don't disagree that the majority of AIDS/HIV individuals are the liberal politicians "pet constituents".

I seem to remember hearing somewhere that the number of gays becoming infected with the disease has gone down in the last couple of years....but that drug users and heterosexuals were on the upswing.

Should it be a "protected class"....no....but some politicians made it that way...and they have been protected in FAIR housing laws at least for the last 10 years, maybe longer. I don't remember if they were protected when I started real estate in 1997 or not...it not it was pretty soon after.

I remember showing a house, not long after I became a Realtor,  to a married couple, and the house was obviously owned by two men. My buyers didn't have a problem, until we went back for a 3rd look right before writing an offer....one bathroom had about 10 pill bottles sitting on the counter and the other one had a jar of "Bag Balm" on the counter. That was all it took for them to not buy the house. I was not allowed to answer any of their questions due to the FAIR housing laws.

GLBT propaganda, the rate of gays becoming infected has increased dramatically since retroviral drugs became available and the diagnosis was no longer a quick "death sentance".

It appears that they got the message anyway.........
