US plane grounded at Mumbai airport
PTI 18 October 2009, 01:15am IST
MUMBAI: The Indian Air Force gave clearance to detained US military chartered plane to fly out from Mumbai on Sunday afternoon. Now the DGCA will decide when it will take off.

Earlier, the US aircraft with 205 American marine commandos on board was made to land at Mumbai airport for allegedly violating the Indian airspace.

The chartered plane was on its way from Fujiriah in UAE to Bangkok, an airport official said. The aircraft was using a civilian call sign, officials said.

He texted me and said that their plane has no air conditioning and they have been sitting there about 5 hours.  He said they landed, and after 3 hours were told they could leave but then the pilots were taken off the plane.  If they don't leave in an hour or less, they will have to stay the night there because their pilots will have to sleep before resuming flight.  Ugh!!!!

That's really odd.  We have aircraft fly that route all the time.  When I went from PACAF to CENTAF thats the exact route we took.

After trying to fob off Indian officials and investigators all of Sunday night, one of the pilots of the United Arab Emirates air force aircraft detained at Kolkata airport since Sunday finally admitted to the plane carrying a consignment of weapons.

Between that and some other ongoing stories on that incident, there was quite a bit else going on there.

Yes, but it possibly implies and gives reasonable cause for there to be a strained relationship between India and planes from the UAE, which it appears your son and his fellow Marines were flying on.  There were quite a few related links on that site to recent incidents between them.  It sounds like your son was caught in a political tussle, thankfully they only experienced a small delay in their travels out of it.  Glad everyone is making it out safely :)

Did you not read the update?  they are still there.  They cannot get off the plane until they get visas to visit India.  They have been sitting in a sweatbox for 8+ hours.  It is NOT over and they are still in India.

They are finally off the plane.  He got to call us.  They sat on the tarmac for 16 hours.  I will be happy when he is finally home on US soil.

Police guard hotel accommodating stranded US marines

Mumbai, Oct 18 (PTI) Security has been beefed up in and around a five-star hotel in the western suburbs where over 200 passengers of the US aircraft checked in after their plane was ordered to land at the airport here today, police said.

A Bangkok-bound chartered US plane in which American marines were among the 205 passengers was ordered by authorities to land at Mumbai airport for flying over Indian airspace without getting the mandatory military clearance.

This is very strange. Nothing in the US media about this?

Oh I forgot it might make the O look bad and less than universally popular.
