The centerpiece of Newsweek's story is how Biden has become the chief White House skeptic on escalating the war in Afghanistan, specifically arguing against Gen. McChrystal's request for 40,000 more troops to pursue a counterinsurgency strategy there.

The piece, by Holly Bailey and Evan Thomas, opens with details of a September 13th national security meeting at the White House. Biden speaks up:

"Can I just clarify a factual point? How much will we spend this year on Afghanistan?" Someone provided the figure: $65 billion. "And how much will we spend on Pakistan?" Another figure was supplied: $2.25 billion. "Well, by my calculations that's a 30-to-1 ratio in favor of Afghanistan. So I have a question. Al Qaeda is almost all in Pakistan, and Pakistan has nuclear weapons. And yet for every dollar we're spending in Pakistan, we're spending $30 in Afghanistan. Does that make strategic sense?" The White House Situation Room fell silent.

Being Greek, I'm partial to Biden's classic use of the Socratic method -- skillfully eliciting facts in a way that lets people connect the dots that show how misguided our involvement in Afghanistan has become.

2. That "the room fell silent" is a load of bullshit. I can rattle off a few reasons off the top of my l'il bunny brain like:

A) the Pakistani government is hanging by a thread amid a population of radicals that hate the US

B) despite their precariousness you don't invade a government that has acted like a friend

C) they have nukes...if their government falls the bad guys get nukes

D) they have nukes...if they look like they are about to fall India will nuke them

This is just pure fabrication on Biden's part saying, "I was so super smart nobody could respond to my super smartness." He probably jerks off to his own picture.

Perhaps the philosophic Mrs Huffington should brush up on Logic 101, namely errors of category a.k.a. the error of the undistributed middle. It is akin to claiming since a horse is an animal all animals are horses. To claim that the money shows the best possible effort does not address what the best possible effort entails. The money is a matter of where the troops are. Unless Vice President So-o-o-oper Genius wants to put 68,000 troops in Pakistan his complaint is meaningless and Arianna is dumb enough to swallow his self-induced ejaculates and proves she is educated enough in the military sciences--or logic--to be allowed to comment.

Basically the Pakistanis have a government and civil/military infrastructure, we are supplying most of that for Afghanistan ergo the huge spending difference.  Also Congress has not exactly been keen on giving Pakistan anything since the Dems took over in 2006, nominally on human rights reasons, but actually to destroy the Bush war effort in Afghanistan at the cost of our Soldiers' lives.  IMHO.

Where al-Qaeda sets up it's winter camps may be within the geographical boundary of what is known as Pakistan...but the Pakistani government doesn't control the area.  It's been that way since my dad was stationed at the Air Base in Peshawar in the USAF in the early 60's.

The Taliban and al-qaeda know this...so they retreat there every year before the snow closes off the Khyber pass and the mountain trails leading into Afghanistan.  It's their safe haven because they know that the Paki army isn't strong enough to come get them and this Administration doesn't have the backbone to push the issue...cross the border and go get them.

So we aren't over spending on Afghanistan you dolt!  Quite frankly we're not spending enough! 

And the longer you dawdle and the rest of the Administration tries to pretend there isn't combat going on in Afghanistan in hopes that it will allow them to woo the anti-war left on Healthcare...the more soldiers from all nations that are service as part of the NATO alliance will die.

Because of how it would affect host nation sensitivities.  They sit there and lob mortars at us cross border because they know we really can't return fire.  The best we are able to do is Predator drone strikes when we positively identify al-Qaeda and Taliban leaders.
