Senate panel passes health bill
« on: October 13, 2009, 05:43:05 PM »

Senators voted by 14 votes to nine to pass the bill, with one Republican joining Democrats on the Senate Finance Committee in voting in favour.

Senator Olympia Snowe became the first Republican to back the proposals.

The reforms, intended to cut costs and make insurance more affordable, are Mr Obama's top domestic priority.

The president welcomed the committee's decision, calling it a "critical milestone".

"We are closer than ever before to passing healthcare reform but we are not there yet," he said. "Now is not the time to pat ourselves on the back... It is time to dig in further and get this done."

This vote gets it out of committee. The legislative process is rather convoluted. If I understand it, Senator Reid is now in charge of taking the three bills and combining them for a floor vote?

Where a single democrat or independent swing vote makes it vulnerable to filibuster.

Unless Senator Snowe stays a turncoat...  :banghead:

The title is misleading.  The Senate did not pass the bill.  It passed the Senate Finance Committee.

The title says Senate panel...  Not Senate.

So if she had not voted for it then it would have passed 13-10,what is the big deal?
Going some when given the balance of numbers in Congress the headlines are all about one Republican voting for the thing.

What does that say about the overall support?

When it comes to a bill this bad, even one republican defecting gives cover to the Dimrats on bipartisan support.

Exactly, and they will play it to the hilt.

That is the point...it is nonsense to assume that yet they are hellbent trying.
If it doesn`t have unanimous dem support on the floor will the MSM say it was a divisive bill that couldn`t even garner complete support from them?
We know that answer.

The press will spin it any way they can to seem a positive regardless of what she did and that they have to try to proclaim it as "bipartisan" only shows how weak the overall support is.
They have 60 votes for heavens sake and one known liberal Republican votes for it meaninglessly in committee is news?

Now if somehow it came down to her being the vote to break a filibuster then I would say the party should expel her if possible (not sure the procedures for that) and let her choose to be an independent or a dem but that isn`t the reality of things yet.

I sure don't.

I sure don't.

Hell,we will be lucky if our own candidate for President last year doesn`t campaign for the damn thing so he can get back in good graces on the talk show circuit.

Political realities are frustrating as anything but they still are realities and one of those is that a northeast Republican in a national office is not going to be a conservative.
Why I never really trusted Romney, you don`t get to be governor of Mass being a conservative.
I don`t like it any better then anyone else but it is what it is and all we can hope is that flyover country dems don`t march lockstep with the socialists in their party.

I just wish our own side would have the backbone to vote Ms Snowe out of any committees she is currently in.
If she can't be trusted, she doesn't need a committee assignment.

The White House run media is already calling it bi-partisan! They think they have a license to steal now! THAT's what a single repub can do, Carl.

My question again is what does anyone expect, sheesh if she had voted against it they would have said about the same just with a condemning..."she towed the party line" snideness.
Does anyone think they didn`t have stories written about how she was strong armed away from her principles or that they are lock step obstructionists?

It has always been that way in my life and will always be when it comes to NBC,ABC,CBS and the print media.

You are old enough I think to remember the attacks on Reagan in the early 80s.
Brutal and viscious,I have some of the old Newsweeks that were virtually printouts from the dem party.
Nothing has changed there and won`t so whatever in my book.

I think she's more interested in what people down the road will think of her, not realizing she's already pissing on her own image quite well enough.  As I understood it, she didn't make up her mind until yesterday, when she decided that, "When history calls, history calls..."

My God...this woman isn't one-tenth as smart or articulate as she thinks she is, and doesn't even SUSPECT how she's being played for the fool.

It took me a bit to connect the koolaid guy to this.  :thatsright:

EDIT: Interesting analysis here:

Quote
This shifts the room's balance of power substantially: The negotiations were previously confined to one liberal Democrat and one centrist Democrat. Now they'll be between one liberal Democrat, one centrist Democrat, and one moderate Republican. In practice, this is likely to mean that Baucus will have something of a trump card against Dodd. If there's a particularly thorny dispute, and Snowe weighs in strongly alongside Baucus, it's hard to imagine Reid siding with Dodd, except in the most extraordinary of cases.

Snowe's vote bought her a seat at the not-so-proverbial table. Perhaps she's smarter than she looks? She's at least bringing a semi-conservative voice into this important legislative step.

On the other hand, it gives the Democrats the Token Republican for a wonderfully democratic bi-partisan bill, truly a tribute to our system of government.  :mental:
