Some friendly etiquette tips for participating in the GLBT forum

Hi, and thanks for reading!

We've had quite the exciting weekend in the GLBT forum, what with the President's address to HRC, the March on Washington for dignity and equality, and of course, just our own cheerful selves hangin' out . Thanks to everyone who was kind enough to hang out with us on such an important weekend on our road to human rights - we love you!

Just a couple of quick housekeeping reminders:

1. Throwing out terms like "faggot" in the GLBT forum is discouraged, especially when long-time posters do it. We love you , but not enough to put up with that shit.

2. Saying that our March would involve assless chaps and simulated fellatio is problematic, since there's a difference between a March and a Pride parade. Thanks for participating, though!

3. Engaging in stereotypes that all gay men are sexual predators who hit on straight men "all the damn time" can cause offense. If you could clean that up a little, we wouldn't feel so sad when we read these posts  We'd much rather be happy!

4. Straight members demanding that we delete a topic not to their personal liking aren't really playing nicely in our sandbox, but you're always welcome!

As always, we love your continued participation and we appreciate all of the love and support.

Big sloppy kisses and happy karma!

Well, all that's nice to know.

It's a big bonfire, so only a few primitive comments:

46. That was my thought. Who would be that insensitive? I think you're having troll problems.

10.  it would also be nice for some reminders stressing this point as well as the insults to women that regularly appear throughout GD as well. And recently toward immigrants. And anyone from other than a "blue" state. This place has almost been unrecognizable lately! I realize we have a "big tent" but some things should be unacceptable. We do have to stand for certain things as Democrats.

13. I wish somebody would write tips for the September 11 forum.

They could use some etiquette in the dungeon.

14. There are two straight people in the LGBT forum who are clearly there just to antagonize and troll. It is sickening. Apparently, anything we believe about advocating strongly for our own rights is not only grossly wrong but stupid. I have no idea why these people are allowed to get away with this shit.

You are being very kind and polite.

We have some wonderful, amazingly understanding straight allies. These ones are not our among our allies. They obviously would not be happy unless we quietly disappeared into the closet and shut up.

67. one particularly vile person claims to be gay.

his proclamations of adoration for obama are beyond creepy and he embraces every straight person that comes into the GLBT forum that patronizes us.

24. doesn't this post belong in the glbt forum...?

i've always wondered- why is it that religious posts and gun posts in gd are sent to their respective dungeons as fast as they're posted, but not the glbt posts?

94. Shorter version:

The whole thing could be summed up as "Try not to act like a privileged asshat. Thanks."

The sad thing is that this had to be said at all on a left-leaning forum.

112. This is Earl and Skinner's sandbox.

If a post is violative of the rules, members, straight or otherwise are encouraged to alert.

117. Earl & Skinner Are Not Gay, And Cannot Be Expected To Completely Understand What Gay People find offensive.

It is perfectly appropriate for a member of the GLBT community to post a list of things one should NOT say when discussing GLBT issues, and it would take a giant asshole to disregard that list and post offensive things anyway.

Sadly, there are MANY giant assholes on DU, and not all of their posts get deleted, whether they've been alerted on or not.

121. This presumes that the only sensibilities that matter are those of GLBT people.

This thread is in GD, but a hypothetical thread in the GLBT groups still shows up on the various summary pages, and more importantly, is available to Google search and will thus be a reflection on DU for a very long time.

If you were to post something I find offensive, straight or not, "in a GLBT sandbox" or not, I'd still alert on it because it is a reflection on DU generally.

Of course it does.

159. A little known fact about GBLT:

Sometimes even adamant supporters of GBLT will argue with members of the GBLT community over political issues and matters of tone and style. If enough people take offense, they can arrange to have these "agitators" banned from posting in the GBLT forum, despite the fact that the argument took place outside the GBLT forum.

That strikes me as massively ****ed up on many levels.

It's a pretty boring bonfire, but a really big one.

There's a reason why patriotism is considered a conservative value. Watch a Tea Party rally and you'll see people proudly raising the American flag and showing pride in U.S. heroes such as Thomas Jefferson. Watch an OWS rally and you'll see people burning the American flag while showing pride in communist heroes such as Che Guevera. --Bob, from some news site

That's pretty freaking gay.
When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.
