Pelosi says new tax is 'on the table'

A new value-added tax (VAT) is "on the table" to help the U.S. address its fiscal liabilities, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Monday night.

Pelosi, appearing on PBS's "The Charlie Rose Show" asserted that "it's fair to look at" the VAT as part of an overhaul of the nation's tax code.

"I would say, Put everything on the table and subject it to the scrutiny that it deserves," Pelosi told Rose when asked if the VAT has any appeal to her.

The VAT is a tax on manufacturers at each stage of production on the amount of value an additional producer adds to a product.

Pelosi argued that the VAT would level the playing field between U.S. and foreign manufacturers, the latter of which do not have pension and healthcare costs included in the price of their goods because their governments provide those services, financed by similar taxes.

*snip*

Pelosi said that any new taxes would come after the Congress finishes the healthcare debate consuming most lawmakers' time, and that it may come as part of a larger overhaul to the tax code.

The Speaker also emphasized that any reworking of the tax code would not result in an increase in taxes on middle-class Americans.

*cough* Bullsh*t, *cough*  Be careful not to step in the steaming pile you left there, Bella.

And the economy continues to crumble... Intentionally... as the elites continue towards the transformation to EU Socialism.

As if paying almost 60% all-up isn't enough?  :censored: these idiots.

I wonder HTF increasing taxes on EVERYTHING is going to help us compete. I'd love to see THAT math!

Yeah, right. Put everything on the table as regards to raising taxes, but not a  :censored: thing about reining in spending, cutting waste, or anything else to actually help the economy.

Only a flaming liberal could deduce that adding additional taxes on various phases of manufacturing which will ultimately be reflected in the cost of the finished product would result in the US becoming "more competitive"

Unions have basically priced US heavy manufacturing out of the world market now, but adding a VAT will make that better?????

WTF.....what planet do these people live on........

We have definately cornered the market on "STUPID". We should tax hell out of it and then export it. STUPID should not be made available to the American consummer.....we have enough already.

And they think we're angry righties now? Guess what, Stretch, we've just about had enough of your frikkin' ideas to cover the money you asshats think you're entitled to! It's come to this, hasn't it? Now you just figure to STEAL it from American manufacturing. Haven't you done enough by allowing the unions to screw management in the backside?

I've got an idea, how 'bout you leaches on the American way of life, work for nothing? Sure as shit that's what you want from us! **** You Bella!

Oh yeah, you remind me of the old horror movies depicting Dracula's bride! Wonder why that is, ya stinkin' vampire of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness? Sit on it and twirl!

The only 'enhancement to comptetition' this will produce is the competition of manufacturers to get the Hell out and off-shore everything so they are only getting hit for the tax on the final step.  There is some dark humor in the fact that a VAT is a totally regressive tax and the people who ride free on the income tax system now will be bearing the brunt of this little misadventure.

The VAT is a tax on manufacturers at each stage of production on the amount of value an additional producer adds to a product.

If you allow that taxes are a destructive force, a burden, a weight around the neck of production, the wording above is amusing and frightening at the same time.  They acknowledge the value of production, and then compartmentalize it for the purposes of encumbering it at every step in the production process.

And for what?  By what right and measure is this tax justifiable?  What's the estimated return and result for something like this?  The consumer gets screwed, of course, but so does the overall economy.  What manufacturer in their right mind would stay and work in that sort of climate?  No, offshore the jobs go, for the companies that don't just fold.

RightCoast is exactly right, it would kill us.
