LONDON, England (CNN) -- A spate of suicides at France Telecom has put the spotlight on
workplace stress and the devastating impact it can have on employees.

There have been 24 suicides and 13 attempted suicides among France Telecom employees since
the beginning of 2008.

Labor unions blame restructuring and poor working conditions for creating a climate of stress.

Last week a 51-year old father of two jumped to his death from a bridge. He was reported to
have left a letter blaming his death on the "atmosphere" at work, according to media reports.

The deputy chief executive of France Telecom Monday resigned in the wake of the staff suicides.

You have to go to weird furrin countries like France and Japan to find people who are dying from
overwork! Oh, no, wait ... that's just to find legal recognition that they're dying from overwork!

This is alarming to the crazies at the DUmp, since the French are the only people in the world
who rival DUmmies in laziness.

1. I've been following this story in French media. It's a huge thing over there.
Shocking to most everyone in France.

2. it was suicides - work didn't kill them - it just added to their depression

They are depressed by the thought of a 37-hour week.

This is funny(and sad) on a number of levels. Frenchmen are pussies for the most part. Their stress levels peak at their shoelaces. The fact that they desire to kill themselves should be no surprise to anyone. The French fold and cop out at the drop of a beret

Don't they have shorter work weeks, more vacation/holidays/sick days and what not?  My guess is that they are upset because their government has been acting like they are finally growing a set of balls.  They fear this new conservatism may reach to the working class, and they'll lose their cushy working standards.

37-hour workweeks?  And it's KILLING them?

Shit, I should have been dead years ago at this rate.  The Japanese, however--now there's a workforce I feel sorry for.

They are so lazy that they value their 6 week vacations higher than their elderly relatives, whom they leave home to die in the summer heat.  'Member that?

Yes, but if you had to live in a shithole country like France, you probably wouldn't be very chipper.

So what's the problem? Too many burkas? The guy couldn't see enough T&A? Telecom? Boy! That must be a stressful job, huh? Answering the phone? Installing internet? What the hell can be stressful in Telecom? Trying to get deadbeats to pay their bills? Just cut off the damn phone! Stress eliminated!

Hell, he should've had to deal with a brain dead Kanadian trying to rip off his government by coming down here for cheaper prices, then get pissed at you when you won't help them do it! I don't think I'm close to suicide, but MURDER or ASSAULT has certainly crossed my mind
I'm the guy your mother warned you about!

Damn right they pound it down.  You would too, if all you had to drink was that crap, and you knew that there was an ambrosia known as single malt scotch elsewhere in the world. :cheersmate:

Believe me, they really pound down the single malt Scotch as well. It is really foreign to us,
but their society attaches no stigma whatever to a businessman who gets falling down drunk with
co-workers on a regular basis. In fact, if anything it's viewed in a positive light. It may be because
no one drives.

Overworked French?

This is an oxymoron, right?

How can you be overworked in a country with a 37 hour week, 6 weeks vacation, and 20% unemployment?   :mental:

Hear, hear...habu sake, anyone?  For the unitiated, it's sake (or awamori) infused with a pit viper, and the venom gets into the sake.  Drink that, and you're flying, so they say.  Also pretty expensive.

And when I was in Yokosuka, I learned the best way to get in with a Japanese family (especially if you wanted to see the guy's daughter for more than 10 minutes) was to bring over a bottle of Jack or other American whiskey.  What cost us less than $10 at the exchange went for nearly $100 out in town.

If after eating cheese and drinking wine for 7 hours a day the sorry French can't get it up, then maybe they should give up F***ing.
