Slave Reparations Has Already Been Done

Since that slave apology thread got locked and I couldn't reply to it. Slave reparation has already been done. Some slaves wanted to go back to Africa. Also, they were repatriated to Africa, especially from England. That is the reason why Liberia and Sierra Leone were established. If slaves were actually alive today, reparations would be less of a issue. Since all slaves are dead, reparation cannot be done. As abhorrent as slavery was, it was legal that time. It was not only White southerners who owned slaves. Many Northerners owned slaves and even Blacks themselves owned slaves. New York City, which was just Manhattan at the time, wanted to secede from the Union because their economy relied on the slave trade. In fact, many freedmen were involved in the slave trade themselves. Slave reparations opens a Pandora's Box. Where does it end? Does it mean that Irish, Welsh, and Scots get reparations from the English, English get reparations from Swedish and Norwegians, Koreans get reparations from Japanese, Chinese, and Russians, or Europeans get reparations from the Vatican?

And does that mean I'll get reparations from Mongolians for Ghinas Cons walking tour of east Europe?

Reparations have already been paid, with the blood of 620,000 American troops.

I, for one, feel no need to appologise for slavery.

We came here in the 30's .................... the 1930 and never owned one.

I always wondered something that maybe one or two of my learned fellow site members might be able to answer for me.

What would  $500.00 1860 US dollars be worth in todays money? And with a modest compounded 6% interest rate what would that come to today?

The reason why I ask is because I believe that 500 bucks was about the low end for a slave back then. Now how many slaves were set free?

Why haven't the families of the former slave owners asked for reparation for having the property seized from them by the government?

Did the government ever offer to pay the slave owners a fair compansation for the release of the slaves?

I do believe that the Civil War was not about slaves ......

I am a first generation American and never owned a slave. There are many things at stake about the Civil War, state's right and economics. The North was more industrial, while the South was more agriculture.

It's wrong to say the Civil War was just about freeing the slaves, but it's also wrong to pretend slavery it wasn't a pivotal issue in why it came about or why an awful lot of those people fought and died.  It is impossible to accurately sum up events of that scale in such simplistic little terms.  One-liners make you look like a genius as a stand-up comic, but like an idiot in a historical discussion.
