Thousands of rabbits have invaded the NSW Upper Hunter town of Aberdeen, eating crops, nibbling on flower gardens and burrowing under building foundations.

Residents say numbers are greater than at any time in the past 40 years, The Daily Telegraph reports.

Farm-hand Ken Smith, 54, said he had never seen rabbits in such destructively high numbers.

Rabbit families have dug warrens right up to the walls of his house, under his front path, around storage sheds and below the water tank.

Even in the middle of the day, dozens of them graze casually in his front yard, retreating to the safety of their burrows at the first sign of any danger.

"You don't even bother trying to grow anything any more because the mongrels will just go for it," Mr Smith said.
