It has a whole lot more to do with curriculum than it does with more days wasted on the same pointless bullshit, and he isn't about to invoke the NEA and youth vote ire by screwing with that.

I'm all for our kids learning more because I do think there is a lot of room for academic improvement in the public school system. I just don't want THIS president setting the agenda.

Bingo.  More days spent discussing touchy-feely crap will not improve America's test scores.  I'm a huge proponent of getting back to basics of education, reading, writing, arithmetic, science, and history.  Hold children back if they are not ready for the next grade level so that they don't hold everybody else back. 

Kids attend more school now, on average, than their parents and grandparents, and still manage to learn less.  It isn't the hours, it is what is being taught that will make the difference.

Yeah, I agree, it's quality over quantity, and I also think this is just another pay-off to the unions - hire more teachers, increase their pay and indoctrination time. Another lead baloon by Obama.

More time in the classroom doesn't make you smart. It's what you do with that time in the classroom.
And kids need time to enjoy themselves. Childhood is so short, why not let them enjoy it while they can?
And having a summer off allows quality time for parents to teach their kids things they won't learn in school.

I'd be thrilled if the kiddies actually went to school for the entire regular school year.  The local school district never has two complete consecutive weeks in session.  They're always off for some "in service" day, holiday, break, etc.....all conveniently spread out through the school year.  "back in the day" we started the day after Labor Day, got 2 days off at Thanksgiving, two weeks around Christmas/New Years, a week for spring break in March, and were out around June 1.

Schools wouldn't have to spend the first three months of every year reviewing everything they forgot over summer vacation.  They might actually learn something.

As much as I am for my children's education I want them to have the chance to be kids just as much. Go fishing and swimming the things I enjoyed as a kid

We started the last week in August, and got out the first week of June. My freshman year , school ran from 8:10 to 3:30, by my senior year it had changed to 8:10-2:20.

My youngest school day starts at 720 ends at 220 my oldest starts at 8 and ends at 420
