The unemployment rate for young Americans has exploded to 52.2 percent -- a post-World War II high, according to the Labor Dept. -- meaning millions of Americans are staring at the likelihood that their lifetime earning potential will be diminished and, combined with the predicted slow economic recovery, their transition into productive members of society could be put on hold for an extended period of time.

And worse, without a clear economic recovery plan aimed at creating entry-level jobs, the odds of many of these young adults -- aged 16 to 24, excluding students -- getting a job and moving out of their parents' houses are long. Young workers have been among the hardest hit during the current recession -- in which a total of 9.5 million jobs have been lost. ...

It sounds like setting the "minimum wage" at lower-management entry level rate is paying off for the left and creating exactly the atmosphere which was intended.

Raising the minimum wage during a recession when young workers were already overly affected is never a good move.  This one con't be blamed on 0Bama for a change, since this was the second phase, but maybe congress and 0Bama could have rolled it back. Too late now.

Honest question, does anyone actually think the minimum wage is too high?  Outside of basic mall retailing jobs and occasional fast food restaurants, does anyone actually earn only minimum wage?

I hired in at minimum wage at my current job, back in 1989, didn't get a raise for 2 months.  Made top scale about 18 months later.

In my "moonlighting" job dealing poker, I'm paid min wage, but I get tips on top of that--usually significantly more per hour.  For example, I worked 11 hours yesterday, dealing about 8-9 of those, and pulled down almost $140 in tips.  $15+ an hour in tips alone--not bad.

And no, virtually no head-of-household makes minimum wage, and turnover in those jobs is astronomical.

Around here, even most entry level jobs seem to pay more than minimum wage.  The minimum wage jobs that I have seen advertised required no skills or experience at all.  Absolute entry-level jobs, like you would see a high school student take.  I'm sure there are some waitressing jobs that make minimum wage, with the assumption that they will earn tips as well, but I didn't make minimum wage even when I got my first high school job, and I certainly don't make it now.

BTW, I am feeling quite proud of being in the 47.8% of young Americans who are employed.  :-)  2.5 years in my current job.   :cheersmate:

Congratulations. Nice to hear some good employment news.

Well, I don't actually get the accompanying raise yet. The law firm isn't doing well enough to actually raise salaries.  But, I figure that it probably means they don't plan to lay me off any time soon. ;)

Sometimes not being laid off is better than getting a raise.  Way to go!   :cheersmate:

Illegals doing the jobs americans don't have to do.....and if we sent all the illegals home, how many jobs would that open up? ..... And if we cut out welfare, foodstamps, section 8 housing, SSDI, years long unemployment benefits, etc. ...how many Americans would go to work? But most importantly, how many votes would the democrats lose.

Just asking.

Americans don't want to mow the lawn or wash dishes in the back of a restaurant.  There is a market for the illegal aliens, that's why they come here.  Today's kids don't know what a hard day's work entails.   They want corner offices, 6 figure salaries, and 8 weeks paid vacation as soon as they graduate.

Yet those jobs, lawn mowing and washing dishes, are the type of jobs that kids need to learn the realities of life. So many today have been spoiled by mummie and daddy.

Correction....  American's don't want to do it for $3.00 an hour.  Ya see we actually have to pay taxes and pay into SSI.

There is a market for illegals cuz the lame assed idiots in D.C. won't enforce the damn immigration laws that are on the books.
