Another Music-related Topic That Interests Nobody
« on: September 22, 2009, 09:10:36 AM »
Kinda esoteric, I know, but I have taken steps to found a brass quintet in my area.

This is truly astonishing because in this particular area of north-central Missouri, a brass quintet is considered something that you affix to your toilet to prevent leaks.

Since tuba players are as scarce as hen's teeth, we're going with the setup a la the American Brass Quintet. I will play bass trombone in lieu of the tuba.

First rehearsal is in mid-October.

Adams E2 Euphonium, built in 2017
Boosey & Co. Imperial Euphonium, built in 1941
Edwards B454 bass trombone, built 2012
Bach Stradivarius 42OG tenor trombone, built 1992
Kanstul 33-T BBb tuba, built 2011
Fender Precision Bass Guitar, built ?

I like the idea.  You are following a dream.  No one can fault that.

Blow forth, my melodic friend.  You got brass.

Awesome.  Making music is what life is all about to the musician.  That is great that you could get a group together.  Have a blast!
R.I.P. LC and Crockspot.  Miss you guys.

I've been considering getting out my horn and practicing. I don't know of much around here, but I haven't checked.

The University of North Texas has one hell of a music program. Dr. Brian Bowman, Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force Band, Retired, teaches there. (He's a euph player for those who may not know -  :rotf: )

There should be a shitload of brass stuff going on, assuming you're in Denton.

This might be a good place to get your feet wet, after maybe a couple weeks of gentle practicing:

Edwards B454 bass trombone, built 2012

Typical of non Texans to get Denton confused with Denison. It's about 55 miles away from me. This might be a little more convenient, but I have a LONG way to go before I can be able to perform this level of music again. I'm certain that my embouchure is not what it once was. Then there's the reading practice, etc. I suppose that I need to acquire an Arban's.

I fled Texas in 1982, never to return. Lucky me!

You know, I was actually thinking Denison, but figured I was wrong. So much for second-guessing myself!   :rotf:

Trust me, Rob. Most community bands are outfitted with enthusiasts who pull their horns out of the case once per week, whether or not they actually need it.  :whatever:

You could get up to reasonable shape within a couple-three weeks. Just play some long tones and flexibility exercises. The long tones will restore some tone quality and the flexibility work will develop chop strength.

I can scan some stuff out of my own Arbans and send it to you if you'd like. I wouldn't buy a copy, unless you pony up $60 for the updated version edited by Brian Bowman and Joseph Alessi. Alessi is the principal trombonist with the NY Phil. It's a much better book (that actually lies flat) and it has virtually all of those 100 year old mistakes corrected.

ETA: Reviewed the Sherman Orchestra site. Yeah, I'd stay away from orchestras for awhile. The wire choir tends to run things and you know how THAT goes! (Besides, who wants to count hundreds of measures of rest at every rehearsal?)

You've got no community band in Denison?

Not that I'm aware of. However, I could be wrong. Sherman is the "Big City" around these parts.

Change No. #77

I'm buyin' a freakin' tuba.

One of these:

It's a Mirafone 184 in BBb. (I ain't learning CC fingerings - I have enough to worry about.)

Rationale: since tuba players around here are practically nonexistent, I could probably find all kinds of work if I develop some reasonable chops on tuba. Prolly won't take long - maybe 2-3 months to develop the characteristic sound.

Technique ain't a problem at all.  :evillaugh:
